Pathfinders Guidelines for Participants
1) Phone the trip leader by the Friday before the trip. If you must cancel, do so in plenty of time.
2) Obtain information from the leader to determine if the trip is within your capabilities.
3) Make sure your boots, clothing and equipment are appropriate for the activity.
4) Stay with the group. Make sure the leader or end-person knows where you are at all times, even if you simply step off the trail to answer “nature’s call”

CYCLISTS – REMEMBER YOUR CYCLING PROTOCOL
The BC Provincial Motor Vehicle Act says:-
1)Wear a bicycle helmet of an approved standard.
2)Ride single file on busy roads or highways.
3)Don’t ride on sidewalks unless otherwise posted.
4)Obey crosswalks.
5)Use hand signals for turns, stopping or slowing down.
6)Ride on the right unless turning left or traveling through an intersection with the traffic, where you stay to the right in the through lane.The Pathfinders also say - Please carry tools and an extra bicycle tube!


Pathfinders Drivers Guidelines - Club trips sometimes take us out in challenging conditions, or to places off the regular highways. This makes it mandatory that vehicles are properly equipped with emergency gear. In winter conditions, we recommend as a minimum.
  • a flashlight and batteries,
  • a shovel,
  • a tow rope/chain,
  • bag of sand (or some means of adding traction),
  • emergency blanket
  • first aid kit.
  • candle and matches, axe/saw, food/water
  • In summer, as a minimum. – all of the above.

    SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 3 (LONG WEEKEND)
    WALK ELGIN HERITAGE PARK, SOUTH SURREY Close to home since it is a long weekend but a walk that we have not done before (at least not to my knowledge). Meet at the old Elgin Hall on Crescent Road, South Surrey. Trails and boardwalks. Round trail 8km. Time about 3 hours. Meet at 9.30

    SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 9TH
    BIKE RICHMOND RAMBLE Gather at Minoru Park on Granville Avenue which has plenty of parking, for a 10am start.  All flat terrain, mostly on cycle paths and designated roadways, 30 - 35 kms.
    We will join the Shell Road Trail, to the South Dyke Road via Finn Slough at #4 Road to Britannia Ship Yards and The Cannery in Steveston Village.  From Gary Point Park we will cycle a reverse Crabapple Trail route to Terra Nova and back to start point. Bring a lunch and lots of water. Signup by Thursday night.

    HIKE  BRANDYWINE MEADOWS (WHISTLER AREA) A fairly steep hike with modest elevation gain to access beautiful alpine meadows. Elevation gain 500 metres.  Distance round trip 7km.  Time approx 4 hours. Meet at St. Davids church - upper levels hwy to carpool. Phone leader for time

    HIKE  SKYLINE TRAIL MANNING PARK  We start at Strawberry Flats for an easy grade elevation up to meadows overlooking Thunder Lake and south to Hozameen Mountain and the North Cascades. Round trip 12km  Time approx 5 hours. Meet at Tim Hortons, Hwy 1 ready to leave by 8.30am

    SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 23rd CELEBRATION OF LIFE We shall celebrate David China’s life at 2.00 pm, in the Great Hall, Kiwanis Seniors’ Housing, 999 Haywood Avenue(off 21st Street) West Vancouver. Parking is limited, more parking is available on the street or at the nearby tennis court.

    SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 23rd
    BIKE: DeBOVILLE SLOUGH This ride is approximatiely 17.2 km long on flat road and dyke. We can add a climb to Addington Lookout at 10.5 km or/and a stop at Minnekhada Regional Park where we can have a lunch.  Meet at Cedar Drive Park on Prairie Avenue in Cocquitlam; from Lougheed Hwy drive north on Coast Meridian Road, turn right onto Prairie Road and drive for about 1km to a small park on the right.     SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 24
    HIKE  BROHM RIDGE SQUAMISH AREA  Lets enjoy a fall hike around the lovely Brohm Lake and through the forest up to the lookout with views of the Tantalus Range. From there we continue to make a loop back to our cars.  Round trip 8km.  Time approx 3 hours.  Meet at St. David’s church, upper levels hwy at 8.30

    FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 29, 8pm
    SOCIAL Play-“ Hilda’s Yard”. Metro Theatre kicks off the season with a Canadian play in honor of Canada’s 150th birthday. Set in 1956, a couple in their 50’s eagerly await the arrival of their first black & white television set! They look forward to evenings with “Ozzie and Harriet”, but instead they get their two adult children returning home. Phone 604-266-7191 to reserve tickets. For those wanting a bite to eat before the play, dinner can be had at Cravings Restaurant at 8808 Osler St.

    SUNDAY OCTOBER 1
    HIKE   MCKEE PEAK (ABBOTSFORD)  A lovely hike around our local mountain with views across to Mt. Baker and down into the Fraser Valley. Meet at our house for coffee and muffins before walking up the road to access the trails.  Round trip approx 3 hours. Trail undulates as it circumnavigates McKee Peak. Meet at 9.00 - phone for directions if needed.

    SATURDAY OCTOBER 7  (LONG WEEKEND)
    HIKE  MT. SEYMOUR (PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A SATURDAY HIKE) A local favourite. The trail leads you up steep slopes and around large rocks. Regardless of the destination you will be assured of panoramic views from any of the three peaks. Round trip is 9km elevation gain 450 metres high point on the third peak is 1,450 metres. Time approx 5 hours. An alternate route partway down via Mystery Lake might be an option, if anyone is interested.  Meet at the Mt. Seymour parking lot at 9.45

    SATURDAY OCTOBER 14
    CYCLE  HARRISON - AGASSIZ   Meet at 11am at the intersection of Lillooet Avenue and Eagle Street, Harrison Hot Springs. Al will lead a 30 km slow paced ride through scenic fall countryside from Harrison Lake to Agassiz and return. All paved. One little hill. Featuring a cheese factory that also sells ice cream, a historic cemetery, and the Agassiz-Harrison Museum and Visitor Centre. Allow at least two hours driving time from Vancouver (about 130 km). Bring lunch and drink. Contact Al by Thursday night. Al will attempt to arrange car pooling. Remember to reimburse driver for 4 hours (260 km). Postponed if raining.

    HIKE  EAGLE BLUFFS (NORTH SHORE)  Starting from Cypress Bowl we will hike up to the lovely little Cabin lake before continuing out to Eagle Bluffs with wonderful views over to Bowen Island and beyond. Meet at St. David’s church, Upper Levels Hwy.  Phone leader for time.

    HIKE  GARIBALDI PARK - PAUL RIDGE/ELFIN LAKES  Another hike that we have not done for a long time. We can hike up to Paul Ridge where some may choose to stop or continue further towards Elfin Lakes. There should be wonderful falls colours and maybe even some late huckleberries. Distance to Red Heather Meadows is 5km plus whatever is your destination. Meet at St. David’s Church, Upper Levels Hwy.  Phone leaders for time.

    POCO Trail The POCO Trail is an approximately 30 km ride following unpaved trails along the Pitt River, Hyde Creek and the Coquitlam River.  October should be a particularly good time for salmon viewing.  Meet at Colony Farm parking lot which is accessed from Highway 7.  Bring lunch.  Contact your leader by Friday evening for starting time.

    HIKE  FLANK TRAIL (WHISTLER) This is a hike requiring cars at each end. The hike starts at Function Junction and ends at the start of the Rainbow Lake trailhead. It is gently undulating with a few uphills, views of Whistler and Blackcomb. Distance 9km, elevation gain minimal. Meet at St. David’s Church at 8.30am

    FRIDAY NOVEMBER 24 SOCIAL Indian Dinner at the New India, 7.00 pm. It’s time for a restaurant meal at this popular Indian buffet restaurant at 805 West Broadway (corner of Willow with good underground parking).     WALK  FOUR LAKES TRAIL (ALICE LAKE PARK - SQUAMISH)  An easy walk starting and finishing at Alice Lake visiting Edith, Fawn and Stump Lakes en route plus the option to add in some other loops. Distance up to 12km with minimal elevation. Meet at St. David’s Church.  Phone for time.

    SOCIAL ANNUAL CLUB PICNIC DEAS ISLAND REGIONAL PARK-
    We can exercise in the morning and eat and socialize in the afternoon. Lunch will be potluck, with everyone contributing to the buffet. Consider bringing croquet, bocci or other games that you may have. Let Alan know (well ahead) if you are coming, what food you will bring, and whether you will join the walkers or the bikers.

    BOUNDARY BAY AND THE SECRET GARDEN Meet at the new Boundary Bay Airport parking lot at 10.00 am. Take Ladner Trunk Road to 72nd Street and turn right. Left turn on Churchill Street and right on Athabaska Street. We will then cycle to Centennial Beach, Tsawwassen and beyond via the dyke. About 30 km round trip. Bring a picnic lunch to eat at the beach. Call by Thursday night to confirm.

    CAL-CHEAK CAMPGROUND TO BRANDYWINE FALLS A wander on an easy path over sturdy bridges and past basalt sugar cubes to see Brandywine Falls at it largest flow (May this year has had twice as much rain/snow as usual). One way 6 km so we may do it as a return trip to get more distance or return via the Bungee Jump bridge to have a new trail. Meet at St. David’s Church at 9:00

    CYCLE POCO TRAIL
    Meet at 10 am at Gillnetter Pub, Mary Hill Bypass at Pitt River Road. This very attractive 26 km loop circuit is mostly good quality unpaved flat trail, and includes Colony Farm, Coquitlam River, De Bouville Slough, and the Pitt River. Bring lunch and drink. No coffee shops. Ride ends at

    HIKE 
    CHEAKAMUS CANYON (Squamish area) An easy hike all the way to the end of Cheakamus Canyon and back. Eat lunch while watch the raging river and perhaps see the CN Rail train wind its way through the Canyon. Distance is 12 km round trip. Minimal elevation gain, time 4 hours. Meet at St. David’s Church at 9:00

    LOCHSIDE TRAIL & GALLOPING GOOSE
    Ride from Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal along the Lochside trail and Galloping Goose approx 47km.
    Thursday & Friday nights stay @ Royal Roads University, Next day we will ride to the end of the Galloping Goose trail. Saturday we will ride to Victoria and stay 2 nights @ UVic.
    Single Dorm rooms at both universities are approx $55. Double rooms $69.per night. Winery stop on the first day-Jazz Fest in Victoria. If interested please let Patsy or Isla know ASAP.

    MARION AND PHYLLIS LAKES (Squamish area) Views across Howe Sound and wonderful misty rushing water in the spring and early summer time. There are small lakes to sit beside for lunch. Round trip 16 km on a logging road to Marion Lake. Elevation gain: 460 m Time: 5 hours Meet at St. David’s Church at 9:00

     JAZZ FESTIVAL AT GRANVILLE ISLAND. Meet at 11:45 am at The Market Stage to listen to Christopher Fraser Trio Then have a picnic lunch, 1 pm - 2:00 pm. (spot to be determined). 2:15 pm meet at Performance Works to hear Tony Wilson Guitarist/Composer with other performers.
    Another suggestion: Buy a ticket $25.00 to for the 9 pm performance at Performance Works.
    Meet for dinner at 7 pm at a venue to be decided on the island and have a relaxing dinner from 7 - 8:30 and then wander to Performance Works for the 9 pm performance of GYPSOPHILA. Contact Lori Miller for more information about these performers and let her know which one or ones you prefer.

    LAVA LOOP TRAIL Hike an easy but pretty trail of about 9 km that starts at Brandywine Falls. The hike may be followed by a swim in Brohm or Alice Lake if it is warm enough. Meet at St. David’s Church at 9:00

    HIKE 
    DEWDNEY TRAIL (Manning Park) This is a new hike for many – through tall forests and on a historic trail to Dry Lake (7 km round trip)and beyond. We can hike as far as we want to go and return the same way. Edgar Dewdney constructed this heritage trail in 1860 on the request of Governor Douglas. This trail was originally called “Mule Road to the Similkameen” and later known as the “Canyon Trail”. Meet at Whatcom at 8:30

    Bard On THE Beach – Much Ado About Nothing - Matinee- 2 pm
    Followed by Bard on the Barbie – a barbecue at Margaret and John’s house, 4014 West 29th Ave. Book your own ticket at Bard on the Beach, 604-739-0559 (www.bardonbeach.org). We recommend doing this early as tickets sell out quickly for matinees. Pathfinders are welcome to come just for the social event at 5 pm.     HIKE 
    BEAR LAKE (Harrison Hotsprings) This is a new hike that is about 11 km round trip. Follow old logging roads for about 5km and have a beautiful view of Harrison Lake. Add another 300 metres to get to Bear Lake. Enjoy a swim and relaxing end to the day in the Harrison Hotsprings. Call leader for meeting place and time.

    HIKE 
    CHANCE CREEK BRIDGE TO PINECREST LOOP This trail uses both new and old BC Hydro roads and is also part of the Sea to Sky Pinecrest to Chance Creek bicycle hiking route. It can be done as a loop trip of about 12 km or one way with pick up at the end by Chance Creek (about 7 km.) While parts of the trail are in open areas under the hydro right of way, other parts are through deciduous forest and by small ponds and lakes. Walk on the rolling terrain on a sunny day and finish with a swim in lovely Lucille Lake . Meet at St. David’s Church for carpool at 8:30.

    MOUNT FROMME (North shore) Fine views over the north shore mountains and Lynn Valley with a round trip of 15 km. Distance 15 km round trip Elevation gain 866 metres with a high point of 3842 metres. Time 5 hours.
    Meet at 9:30 with directions to beginning of trail available from leader.

    FORT LANGLEY - this is approximately a 30 km ride, mostly flat with a couple of gentle hills. We will meet at Fort Langley, 23433 Mavis Ave, Langley ( parking lot or on stree) at 10:00. Bring a picnic lunch for a stop by the river at Glen Valley Park. Contact leader by Friday if you plan to attend.

    MOUNT SEYMOUR DEMONSTRATION FORREST A 24 kilometer ride on a paved scenic road with considerable elevation change. The last 2 Km. meanders though old growth forest to a fish hatchery. From there a small distance to a look out over the Seymour Dam where we will have lunch. Meet at 10 AM. To get there take exit 22A Lillooet Road off the highway and go all the way to the parking lot at the end. Call David by Friday to confirm.

    SUGAR MOUNTAIN TRAIL FROM BUNTZEN TO SASAMAT LAKE This variation on the Buntzen Sasamat crossover takes you through woods and forests from one lake to another. It is about 11-12 k - 4hs hiking time up and down both ways, with the possibility of shortening the hike by having a car at each end..

    HIKE IN THE COQUIHALLA AREA Camp for 3 nights and do day hikes - Palmer’s Pond, HBC trail to Horsecamp, Illal Meadows. Contact leaders by preceding mid-week for times and food arrangements. Your own tenting accommodation needed.

Meet at 10:00 am at the parking lot on Harris Road immediately south of the Alouette River Bridge. From Lougheed Highway turn left on Dewdney Trunk Road just east of Pitt River Bridge. Pathfinders Guidelines for Participants
1) Phone the trip leader by the Friday before the trip. If you must cancel, do so in plenty of time.
2) Obtain information from the leader to determine if the trip is within your capabilities.
3) Make sure your boots, clothing and equipment are appropriate for the activity.
4) Stay with the group. Make sure the leader or end-person knows where you are at all times, even if you simply step off the trail to answer “nature’s call”

CYCLISTS – REMEMBER YOUR CYCLING PROTOCOL
The BC Provincial Motor Vehicle Act says:-
1)Wear a bicycle helmet of an approved standard.
2)Ride single file on busy roads or highways.
3)Don’t ride on sidewalks unless otherwise posted.
4)Obey crosswalks.
5)Use hand signals for turns, stopping or slowing down.
6)Ride on the right unless turning left or traveling through an intersection with the traffic, where you stay to the right in the through lane.The Pathfinders also say - Please carry tools and an extra bicycle tube!


Pathfinders Drivers Guidelines - Club trips sometimes take us out in challenging conditions, or to places off the regular highways. This makes it mandatory that vehicles are properly equipped with emergency gear. In winter conditions, we recommend as a minimum.
  • a flashlight and batteries,
  • a shovel,
  • a tow rope/chain,
  • bag of sand (or some means of adding traction),
  • emergency blanket
  • first aid kit.
  • candle and matches, axe/saw, food/water
  • In summer, as a minimum. – all of the above.

SNOWSHOE  SALMON RIDGE SNOW PARK (MT. BAKER) The Nooksack Nordic Ski Club maintains a network of low-level (2,100 ft) cross country snowshoe trails in the Mt. Baker area. In recent years the snow pack has been low at that altitude, but this year is shaping up as a winner. We’ll want to do the upper 6km trail with views of Shuksan then (optionally) one of the two lower 12km trails. Meet at the Mt. Baker Ranger station at 9.30. SOCIAL MATINEE - MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS GOT HER HEAD CHOPPED OFF. 2.00 pm, Jericho Arts Centre, Vital Spark Theatre. The familiar tale of the enmity between Elizabeth 1st of England and Mary Queen of Scots is retold with ferocious iconoclasm and boundless wit by Scotland's most popular and contemporary playwright, Liz Lochead. The reviews have been terrific. This is the last performance!! Reservations for 6 seats have been made, hopefully the number can be increased if you contact leader immediately.

SNOWSHOE/MICROSPIKES/YAK TRAX  CABIN LAKE, EAGLE BLUFFS This is a short steep climb up to Cabin Lake and on to Black Mountain (4 km) before continuing on to Eagle Bluffs (8km round trip). Meet at the downhill ski parking lot. Check with Sue for time and to let her know that you are coming.

CYCLE CANADA LINE BRIDGE TO IONA BEACH This is an easy ride, approximately 25 km round trip.   Meet either at 10:00 am at the North end of the Canada Line Bridge (foot of Cambie in Vancouver) or at 10:20 at the South end of the Bridge (on River Road in Richmond).   The route follows along the North side of the Airport to Iona Beach Park where we will have lunch.   Call by Thursday evening to confirm.Leader:  David Parsk   604-929-1257

SNOWSHOE POLAND LAKE OR WINDY JOE, MANNING PARK This can be either a day trip or stay overnight at the lodge. Hopefully the chair lift will still be running to make this an easier snowshoe into the lake. Check with Aileen later to see which destination it will be and whether you want to stay overnight.

The forecast for Sunday is very good at present and Al has offered to lead an easy ride on the West side.  Meet at 10:00 am at Balaclava Park, corner of Balaclava and West 29th Avenue (washrooms and ample free street parking).  We will cycle to UBC (coffee break) then Spanish Banks and False Creek.  Bring lunch.   Contact Al by 4:00 pm on Saturday or leave a message Saturday evening.

HIKE  UBC MALCOLM KNAPP FORESTRY TRAILS A lovely ramble through the UBC research forest in Maple Ridge. Round trip is approx 8km with an elevation gain of 980ft. See page 184 in 109 Walks in BC’s Lower Mainland. To reach the parking area take Lougheed Highway 7 following signs for Golden Ears Provincial Park and stay on 232nd Street when the park road turns right after the bridge over the South Alouette River. HIKE     AROUND BUNTZEN LAKE with the Swiss Outdoor Club,
 We meet at 11 am  at the lowest parking lot , opposite the entrance to Buntzen Lake Park   ( near IOCO ) .
 The hike will take us around the lake; 10 km distance; 5 hour trip time incl. lunch break.
Level of difficulty:  medium. Bring lunch and rain gear.

 HIKE LYNN HEADWATERS REGIONAL PARK The trail starts along Lynn Creek and passes some historic relics of the logging days. We can do this as a loop trail with a return on the east trail or lengthen by continuing on to Norvan Falls. Distance 18km if round trip to Norvan Falls - elevation gain 230 m. Time 6 hours. CYCLE           BIKE THE BLOSSOMS – VANCOUVER
Bike the Blossoms is based on a 25 km bike-friendly loop around Vancouver streets that are known for having cherry blossom trees. The route is mostly flat with a hill on Ontario Street. Meet at 10:00 am in the 37th Avenue parking lot of VanDusen Gardens at the intersection of Oak and 37th. We will have lunch at a Commercial Drive restaurant. Call by Saturday evening to confirm.

SUNDAY MAY 7 
RAMBLE  FAIRHAVEN (BELLINGHAM) Chuckanut Mountain (actually a long ridge) is a favourite early season area. There’s logging scheduled for part of this area and a big local push to raise money to protect it. This year might be our last chance for a walk in pristine wilderness. We will be able to find snow free networks of trails. It will be pretty easy and not more than 10km and of course we will want to stop for a stellar ale in Bellingham on the way home. Meet at North Chuckanut Mountain trailhead, 705 Chuckanut Drive N (just South of Fairhaven, ask Rick for a map) at 9.30.

CYCLE           ARBUTUS GREENWAY:  FALSE CREEK TO FRASER RIVER
Al will lead an approx. 27 km slow-paced ride with long but gentle (railway grade) hills. All paved and mostly new. Meet at 10:00 am at Al’s (3229 West 24th Ave) for coffee and muffin. Bikes in back yard. If needed, find parking on Balaclava between 22nd and 23rd (Valdez Park). Lunch on Fraser River at the Milltown Pub. Choose pub food or bring your own. SNOWSHOE  NEEDLE PEAK (COQUIHALLA AREA) A snowshoe trip with rewards of views in every direction. The days are now longer and hopefully warmer to enjoy the Coquihalla mountains. Round trip 12km   We begin with a fairly steep climb traversing up to the ridge where we can now enjoy the views and head towards our lunch destination. HIKE OTHELLO TUNNELS/HOPE NICOLA TRAIL (HOPE)
The tunnels should be open after the annual check up ready for us to enjoy some of the spectacular scenery in the canyon. You will have two choices (a) a flat walk along the Coquihalla river and through the tunnels return or (b) continue over the Hope/Nicola trail and back down to meet the others. The Hope/Nicola trail is 7.0km round trip with an elevation gain of 350m. Meet at Tim Horton's Whatcom Road, Abbotsford 9.00

SOCIAL ANNUAL CLUB PICNIC DEAS ISLAND REGIONAL PARK- We can exercise in the morning and eat and socialize in the afternoon. Lunch will be potluck, with everyone contributing to the buffet. Consider bringing croquet, bocci or other games that you may have. Let Alan know (well ahaead) if you are coming, what food you will bring, and whether you will join the walkers or the bikers.
