Pathfinders Guidelines for Participants

1) Phone the trip leader by the Friday before the trip. If you must cancel, do so in plenty of time.
2) Obtain information from the leader to determine if the trip is within your capabilities.
3) Make sure your boots, clothing and equipment are appropriate for the activity.
4) Stay with the group. Make sure the leader or end-person knows where you are at all times, even if you simply step off the trail to answer “nature’s call”

CYCLISTS – REMEMBER YOUR CYCLING PROTOCOL

The BC Provincial Motor Vehicle Act says:-
1)Wear a bicycle helmet of an approved standard.
2)Ride single file on busy roads or highways.
3)Don’t ride on sidewalks unless otherwise posted.
4)Obey crosswalks.
5)Use hand signals for turns, stopping or slowing down.
6)Ride on the right unless turning left or traveling through an intersection with the traffic, where you stay to the right in the through lane.The Pathfinders also say - Please carry tools and an extra bicycle tube!



Pathfinders Drivers Guidelines - Club trips sometimes take us out in challenging conditions, or to places off the regular highways. This makes it mandatory that vehicles are properly equipped with emergency gear. In winter conditions, we recommend as a minimum.
  • a flashlight and batteries,
  • a shovel,
  • a tow rope/chain,
  • bag of sand (or some means of adding traction),
  • emergency blanket
  • first aid kit.
  • candle and matches, axe/saw, food/water
  • In summer, as a minimum. – all of the above.

SOCIAL 

CHRISTMAS WREATH DECORATING AND POTLUCK SUPPER 5:00pm. Last year we made beautiful Christmas flower arrangements. This year get into the Christmas spirit while decorating a Christmas wreath with baubles and ribbons alongside your potluck companions. We can purchase your cedar covered wreath/s for you at a cost of $10 each. You provide your own decorations from your Christmas stash, alternatively lots of decorations are available at a Dollar Store or Michaels. Bring a dish to share for our potluck supper. BLACK MOUNTAIN (NORTH SHORE) With Christmas fast approaching let’s have a shorter snow shoe on the North Shore. Most of you will have done this trip before and know that it starts out with a steep climb up to Cabin Lake where you can then make the decision as to whether to carry on out towards Eagle Bluffs. SUNDAY JANUARY 18
SNOWSHOE (NEW) 

MANNING PARK POLAND LAKE Sunday's trip to snowshoe above the Sea to Sky gondola has been postponed due to low snow conditions. Instead we are heading to Manning Park where hopefully we will ride the orange chair up the alpine slopes and then be able to walk into Poland Lake. It is a gradual walk down to the lake and then of course followed by a gradual walk back up, followed by walking down the side of the downhill area. Round trip is approx 12 km. There is a charge of $5 to ride the chair up.

Pathfinders Nickel Plate Trip

We are planing a trip to Nickel Plate 
(Apex Mountain) driving up on Monday March 2nd (and stopping to ski or snowshoe at China Ridge, Princeton en route)  returning Friday March 6th. Apex Mountain resort has a variety of accommodation from hostels, hotel rooms to condos and at this time of year they offer a stay for 4 nights and pay for 3. You can choose to downhill ski at Apex or drive a few km to Nickel Plate and cross country ski or snowshoe. You will be responsible for booking your own accommodation depending on your budget.       SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 7 
      HIKE HIGH FALLS (Squamish area). After a steep beginning, this scenic hike winds along High Falls Creek and has views of Cloudburst and Squamish River Valley on the way back down a logging road. Round trip 12 km. Allow 5 hours Elevation gain 640 m. Meet at 8:30am at St. David’s Church for car-pooling. Call by Friday evening.

      SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 7 
       CYCLE EAST RICHMOND/NEW WESTMINSTER Meet at Richmond Nature Park at 10.00 am to cycle through the farm lands of East Richmond and the middle arm of the Fraser River. Bring a picnic lunch to eat on the banks of the North Fraser River. The distance is 25/30 kms, no elevation gain except over the highway. There is one busy section along Westminster Hwy and about 4.5 km of packed gravel.  Call by Friday if you plan to participate.

      WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 10 
       SQUAMISH GONDOLA  AND HIKE. This is a special Wednesday/Sunday combination. Cost for seniors is $29.95 for on line purchase; pay at the booth is $32.95. If we can get 15 people then we get a group rate, but this requires a single payment 48 hours in advance for the entire group. Meet at Porteau Cove picnic area at 8.30 am for a picnic breakfast. Maybe bacon, eggs and pancakes if you want to cook (cooks may want to get there about 8.15am to get things going). You are responsible for your own breakfast. We would plan to be at the Gondola by 10.00am. At the top, the hikes can be any length, from 2km to 10km. This is weather dependant. Contact the leader by Sunday evening for details and to organize car pools and dining arrangements.

      SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 14
      HIKE WEDGEMOUNT LAKE (Whistler). A hike which we have not done for a long time.This is the most northern of the accesses to Garibaldi Park and takes you to a spectacular lake fed by glaciers. The round trip is 14km, elevation gain is 1160m (16.6%); the high point is 1920m. Estimated time is 8hrs. Meet at St. Davids church at 8.00am. Call by Friday evening.

      SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 21, 
       HIKE MT FROSTY, LARCH TREE MEADOW (Manning Park). The Pathfinders have not done this hike for a few years. A good fall hike. The trail rises in a series of switchbacks for about 7km to the Larch forest in the meadows, just past the Frosty Creek Camp. If the weather is good, you may want to proceed further, maybe even to the top. The round trip to the larches is 14km; to the top about 22km. A hike to the top is 7-8 hours. Meet at Tim Hortons, Whatcom Road at 8.00am (a long drive and hike). Call by Friday evening.

      SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 21
      CYCLE Blaine to Semiamhoo Meet at Peace Arch Border at 9.30am. (Canadian side). Bring Passport, travel insurance and a lunch. Cycle along Peace Portal Drive into Blaine WA after clearing customs. Rick will meet us at Peace Portal/Marine Drive traffic circle (about 1/2km over the border. Mostly flat and paved, approx. 33kms.       SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 27TH 
       SOCIAL Guided Nature/bird walk around the Hastings Park Sanctuary followed by lunch at the Moulin Rouge. The Sanctuary is a hidden gem in East Vancouver’ s Hastings Park. At least 150 bird species have been identified in this urban wilderness since it was restored in 1997. Meet at the west entrance to the sanctuary directly east of Pandora Street off of Renfrew St at 9:00am. We will be led by ornithologist Istvan Orosi. The tour will last approximately 2 hours. Bring your cameras and binoculars and a good appetite for lunch /brunch at the Moulin |Rouge where no dish is over $10 (a short distance from the Sanctuary on Hastings St.)

      SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 28 
       HIKE JOFFRE LAKES (Pemberton/Duffey Lake). An old favourite but not done by the Pathfinders for several years. The trail leads you up past three beautiful lakes to the wild terrain beneath the Matier Glacier. Round trip, 11km; elevation gain 350m; high point 1600m. Time 6-7 hours. Leave St. David’s church at 7.30 am. Call by Friday evening.

      SUNDAY OCTOBER 5 
      HIKE DAMFINO LAKES (Mt. Baker). The trail winds 1.5km through forest to Damfino Lakes. The scenery is particularly beautiful in the fall when blueberry bushes turn the slopes red. Distance 10km round trip; elevation gain 410m. Meet at the Glacier Ranger Station at 9.00am. Call by Friday evening. Bring passport and medical coverage.

      SATURDAY OCTOBER 11 (N.B. This is a SATURDAY ride)
      CYCLE STRATHCONA AND CHINATOWN TO LAKEWOOD Meet at 10:00 am at 8th Avenue and Yukon Street in Vancouver. We will cycle via Science World through the streets of Chinatown, past heritage homes and several points of interest to Uprising Bakery. Bring your lunch or purchase from the bakery.        HIKE ELFIN LAKES (Diamond Head). For many, an old familiar hike to the Elfin Lakes with maybe lots of wonderful fall colors. Distance 22km round trip to Elfin Lakes. Elevation gain 760 meters to lakes. Time - 7 hours. Meet at St. David’s Church at 7.30am. Call by Friday Night. Leader: TBA

       SOCIAL SLIDE SHOW 7:00pm THE HUNTER/HICKMAN AND PILLEY ADVENTURES IN VIETNAM AND CAMBODIA . Slide shows are always popular so book early to reserve a seat for this travel adventure along the coast of Vietnam, the Mekong River, Ankor Watt in Cambodia and motor biking around the north Vietnamese Highlands.       SUNDAY OCTOBER 26
      CYCLE RICHMOND, CANADA LINE BRIDGE, FRASER FORESHORE. Meet at 10:00 am at Richmond Nature Park to ride over the Canada Line Bridge to Kent Avenue in Vancouver and on to Fraser Foreshore Park for lunch. Mainly low traffic roads except for one small section. Approximately 30 km. Bring lunch. Call by Friday evening if attending.

      SUNDAY NOVEMBER 2,
      HIKE WHISTLER FLANK TRAIL. This is a hike requiring cars at each end.
      The hike starts at Function Junction and ends at the start of the Rainbow
      Lake trailhead. It is gently undulating with a few up-hills sections, views of Whistler and
      Blackcomb and fall colours. Distance 9km, elevation gain minimal.

      HIKE ALICE LAKE PARK – FOUR LAKES TRAIL We start at Alice Lake and soon after begin the ascent of Debeck Hill (300 m.) with good views from the top. Descending the hill we begin to work our way around counterclockwise to Edith, Fawn and Stump lakes. Total distance is 12 km. Meet at St. David’s Church (Taylor Way) 9.00am. Call by Friday evening.

      SUNDAY NOVEMBER 23 
       HIKE EAGLE BLUFFS (Cypress) Climb from Cypress Bowl to this bluff and enjoy familiar but still breathtaking views to Bowen Island the Georgia Straight and to Vancouver Island. Round Trip 6 km. Time 4 -5 hours. Meet in Cypress Bowl Downhill Ski Parking Lot at 9:30am. Call by Friday evening.

Please note that Pathfinders Events are open to members in good standing who have completed an application and release form. Guests accompanying a member do so at their own risk.

Out of town, more than an hour away, $20.00. Local, less than one hour away, $10.00.

Pathfinders Guidelines for Participants

1) Phone the trip leader by the Friday before the trip. If you must cancel, do so in plenty of time.
2) Obtain information from the leader to determine if the trip is within your capabilities.
3) Make sure your boots, clothing and equipment are appropriate for the activity.
4) Stay with the group. Make sure the leader or end-person knows where you are at all times, even if you simply step off the trail to answer “nature’s call”

CYCLISTS – REMEMBER YOUR CYCLING PROTOCOL

The BC Provincial Motor Vehicle Act says:-
1)Wear a bicycle helmet of an approved standard.
2)Ride single file on busy roads or highways.
3)Don’t ride on sidewalks unless otherwise posted.
4)Obey crosswalks.
5)Use hand signals for turns, stopping or slowing down.
6)Ride on the right unless turning left or traveling through an intersection with the traffic, where you stay to the right in the through lane.The Pathfinders also say - Please carry tools and an extra bicycle tube!



Pathfinders Drivers Guidelines - Club trips sometimes take us out in challenging conditions, or to places off the regular highways. This makes it mandatory that vehicles are properly equipped with emergency gear. In winter conditions, we recommend as a minimum.
  • a flashlight and batteries,
  • a shovel,
  • a tow rope/chain,
  • bag of sand (or some means of adding traction),
  • emergency blanket
  • first aid kit.
  • candle and matches, axe/saw, food/water
  • In summer, as a minimum. – all of the above.












Cyclists Alert - If anyone is interested in cycling the 32km.Lockside Trail from Swartz Bay to Victoria, staying overnight in Victoria, or cycling the Galloping Goose Trail, in June, August or September, please call Patsy. We would be going between Monday and Thursday when the ferry is half price for seniors.

HIKE 

UBC RESEARCH FOREST – Hike through rolling country and past numerous lakes to a lookout destination for lunch. Descend through forest to the Alouette River to return. Be prepared for possible wet feet – late snow may last for a long time at the highest elevations. Distance: 15.5 km. Elevation gain: 610 m. Time: 6 hours. Meet at the north end of Silver Valley Road at 9.30 am. Contact leader by Friday night.

CYCLE 

VANCOUVER – UBC The ride starts at 10th and Ontario and heads to UBC by way of the Seaside route. Steep hill before reaching UBC. We will have lunch (bring lunch) at UBC Rose Garden. Returning by SW Marine Drive along 37th Ave to Heather at 10th. Distance 25K. Meet at 10th and Ontario @ 10:00 am. Call leader by Thursday night to confirm.

EAST CANYON TRAIL GOLDEN EARS/ALOUETTE LAKE
This hike has been on the agenda for quite a while but mudslides and other events have resulted in a no-go for the last few years. It is an easy hike along the lovely Gold River. Although Hector Ferguson Lake could be a goal, any distance along the river is a pleasant expedition. We will meet at 9:00 at the parking lot at the corner of Fern Crescent and 232 Ave.

FLOWER SKETCHING – VAN DUSEN GARDENS Bring a snack or your lunch and something to sit on in order to study the lovely blossoms. Trudie will bring crayons and sketch books, and people can bring their own materials if they wish. The goal is not to create beautiful drawings, but to have creative fun together. There is a roofed space to seek shelter if it rains and Dick Reiner and Tony Keen will be on hand as artistic advisors. Admission to the gardens is $10.75, or $8.00 for seniors. Meet at the ticket booth at 10.30 am.

HIKE AND KAYAK TO WIDGEON FALLS
This event features cross-training. An hour’s paddle and a 3 km hike will bring you to the upper falls of Widgeon Creek. Then back again and hope your boat is still there on the shore! Sunday's are busier so we will meet about 9:00am Pitt Lake canoe rentals # 604-836-7117 seven days a week year round $55 for day $85 for overnight. (Divide the price by two with your paddling partner.)

Reservations have been made already for campsites for the people who have indicated interest in this adventure. HIKE 

THREE CHOP TRAIL ON MOUNT SEYMOUR
This trail gradually ascends to 2500 ft, which hopefully will be snow free by June. The trail ascends from Indian River road to the Deep Cove Lookout. On the way down the Old Buck trail will be taken to get to the Vancouver Lookout and then descend to return by the Baden Powell trail. Total is 13k although there is a shorter option for the way back.

PITT LAKE A scenic ride along dikes and roads with a stop for lunch at Pitt Lake. About 30 km and all flat. Rough in places so probably not suitable for road bikes. Meet at 10:00 am at the parking lot on Harris Road immediately south of the Alouette River Bridge. From Lougheed Highway turn left on Dewdney Trunk Road just east of Pitt River Bridge. Turn left again on Harris Road. Call by Friday night to confirm.

HIKE 

HEMLOCK TRAIL TO PINE AND CEDAR LAKES USA (NEW)
We’ve hiked the Oyster Dome/Bat Caves loop in the southern Chuckanuts previously. This trail meanders along the northern Chuckanut Mountain ridge with expansive views of the San Juans and Mt. Baker. Our walk includes a lunch stop at Pine & Cedar lakes (7 km), then a short loop to return by a parallel route along the mountain ridge. 15 Km Round Trip, 1400 ft (430 m) elevation gain.

 Meet at trailhead at 9:30: Take I-5 Exit 250 and follow Old Fairhaven Parkway / SR 11 west 1.3 miles (2 km) to 12th Street (signal light). Turn Left and follow Chuckanut Drive / SR11 south 1.5 miles (2.5 km) to North Chuckanut Mountain trailhead parking area on the left (just past intersection with Old Samish Rd).

POCO TRAIL The Poco Trail is an approximately 30 km ride following unpaved trails along the Pitt River, Hyde Creek and the Coquitlam River. Meet at Colony Farm parking lot which is accessed from Highway 7. Bring lunch. Contact your leader by Friday evening for starting time.

HOPE LOOKOUT (NEW)
This short steep hike has many rests and a loop trail if you want to opt out early. Climbing on switchbacks you reach a first lookout and then for unimpeded view of Hope, Kawkawa Lake and the Coquihalla and Fraser Rivers from the second lookout. Meet at Whatcom Rd. at 9:00

Followed by Bard on the Barbie – a barbecue at the Kinney’s home. CHEAKAMUS CANYON
An easy hike all the way to the end of Cheakamus Canyon and back. Eat lunch while watch the raging river and perhaps the CN Rail train wind its way through the Canyon. Check another piece of the Sea to Sky route off your list. Perhaps go swimming in Starvation Lake. Distance is 12 km round trip. Minimal elevation gain, time 4 hours. Meet at Upper Levels St. David’s Church at 9:00.

HIKE 

COUGAR MOUNTAIN ANCIENT CEDARS to HANGING LAKE (Whistler area) NEW
A short hike along logging roads and then into the forest to the wonderful Ancient Cedars grove as an initial destination. Then upward on a new tagged trail to a lake high above. On the way back, a diversion is possible to Showh Lake where swimming may be possible.
Distance 6 km. round trip to Ancient Cedars, Elevation 150 metres, time 2 1⁄2 hours added elevation and time to get to lake ? another 2 hours?

BOUNDARY BAY, THE SECRET GARDEN AND MAPLE BEACH
Meet at the new Boundar
y Bay Airport parking lot at 10.00 am. Take Ladner Trunk Road to 72nd Street and turn right. Left turn on Churchill Street and right on Athabaska Street. We will then cycle to Centennial Beach, Tsawwassen and beyond via the dyke. About 30 km round trip. Bring a picnic lunch to eat at the beach. Call by Friday night to confirm.

MACGUIRE PEAK (Chilliwack area) NEW
Depending on if we can get in with a 4 wheel drive the round trip is 8 km and 4 hours, otherwise it will be 12 km and 6 hours. The short steep ascent gives access to stunning views into the US areas of the border peaks including Tomyhoi peak while Canadian views are throughout the Chilliwack Valley.

WALK/ BIKE/BBQ SOCIAL PATHFINDERS TRIATHALON –Hike, Bike and Eat!! Meet at 10 am at the home of Doug and Sandra in Abbotsford to drop off your food and beverage for the potluck barbecue before heading off for a cycle or hike. Bring your own meat or fish to grill plus a dish to share. Return in the afternoon for the social followed by an afternoon BBQ. CYCLE Sumas Prairie/Valley (Abbotsford). This 40 m cycle goes from Upper Sumas School (corner of Whatcom & Vye Roads) to Yarrow, where we will eat our lunches in the park before returning to the starting point. Mountain views are seen at every turn. After dropping off your food, meet at Upper Sumas School playing field at 10.15 am.

SATURDAY AUGUST 2 (LONG WEEKEND) 
HIKE 
MOUNT STRACHAN (North Shore)
Views in all directions and possibly flowers (or late snow). Ascend by the Howe Sound Crest trail starting from the Cypress downhill ski parking lot and return the same way or by the ski trail.
Round trip approx. 10 km. Allow 5 hours, elevation gain 538 meters.
Meet at Cypress Mountain downhill ski parking lot at 9:30 am.

SOCIAL After the hike some may want to buy (or bring) a picnic supper to eat while enjoying the West Vancouver Harmony Arts Festival along Ambleside Park and John Lawson Park at the foot of 16th Avenue. See www.harmonyarts.ca – by June they should have the musicians listed but there are also arts and crafts and various booths that are set up for the festival. Non-hikers- just join us for the festival.

FRASER VALLEY SLOW FOOD CYCLE TOURS
These two self-guided tours are about 25 km each on flat public roadways in the Agassiz area on the Saturday and Chilliwack on the Sunday. Time is flexible between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm. The cost is about $20 and includes a map and access to farms where you may buy produce and have it delivered to your car. THEATRE UNDER THE STARS - Legally Blonde. If you didn’t get to the Bard Night this is an opportunity to experience another Vancouver Summer tradition. This blond-tastic musical of 2013 is back by popular demand and a repeat from last year. Legally Blonde is based on the novel by Amanda Brown & the Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer movie. More info is available on TUTS web site. We’ll meet in the park around 7:00pm share finger deserts and buy our tickets on the night (to avoid a rainy night). The show starts at 8:00pm. Alternative date in the case of rain will Aug 15.

This is an approximately 35 km cycle ride which is flat except for a couple of gentle hills. We will meet at Derby Reach Regional Park on the North (river) side of Allard Crescent at 10.00 am. MOUNT OTTOMITE (Coquihalla) NEW
Forever finding new hikes Doug and Sandra led some of the snowshoers on this trail to near the ridge. We will now hike to the ridge and beyond to the base of Mount Zupjok. An easy undulating hike this is a great way to see some of the Coquihalla peaks and valleys without too much exertion. Round trip about 5 1⁄2 hours.

Spend several days hiking in the high country of Cathedral Lakes Provincial Parks (close to and above

BRANDYWINE MEADOWS (Whistler area)
A fairly short steep hike with modest elevation gain to hopefully see some alpine flowers. If it is hot, access to the mountain stream should keep everyone cool. Elevation gain 500 metres Distance 6 km. Time 3 – 4 hours. The Whistler Ironman is July 27th so will not interfere with the hike this year.

LOWER SEYMOUR CONSERVATION RESERVE
This ride is 24 km round trip with some elevation gain. Bring your lunch. The route is paved, with a short section of unpaved trail. We’ll be taking the Seymour Valley Trailway to the River Fish Hatchery and a picnic spot beside the Seymour River. Possible sightings of deer, bear, cougar and other wildlife. Meet at the LSCR parking lot (Rice Lake Gate) at 10.00 am. By Car: Take Hwy 1 to North Vancouver and exit 22B North Lillooet Road to parking. Also accessible by public transit.
