Pathfinders Guidelines for Participants

1) Phone the trip leader by the Friday before the trip. If you must cancel, do so in plenty of time.
2) Obtain information from the leader to determine if the trip is within your capabilities.
3) Make sure your boots, clothing and equipment are appropriate for the activity.
4) Stay with the group. Make sure the leader or end-person knows where you are at all times, even if you simply step off the trail to answer “nature’s call”

CYCLISTS – REMEMBER YOUR CYCLING PROTOCOL

The BC Provincial Motor Vehicle Act says:-
1)Wear a bicycle helmet of an approved standard.
2)Ride single file on busy roads or highways.
3)Don’t ride on sidewalks unless otherwise posted.
4)Obey crosswalks.
5)Use hand signals for turns, stopping or slowing down.
6)Ride on the right unless turning left or traveling through an intersection with the traffic, where you stay to the right in the through lane.The Pathfinders also say - Please carry tools and an extra bicycle tube!



Pathfinders Drivers Guidelines - Club trips sometimes take us out in challenging conditions, or to places off the regular highways. This makes it mandatory that vehicles are properly equipped with emergency gear. In winter conditions, we recommend as a minimum.
  • a flashlight and batteries,
  • a shovel,
  • a tow rope/chain,
  • bag of sand (or some means of adding traction),
  • emergency blanket
  • first aid kit.
  • candle and matches, axe/saw, food/water
  • In summer, as a minimum.all of the above.

    SUNDAY DECEMBER 1 
     HIKE MINNEKHADA REGIONAL PARK (PORT COQUITLAM) An easy early winter walk around the park which should take us about 2.5 hours depending on the trail we take followed by a visit to the lodge which will be open from 1 – 4pm for their Creative Cafe There should be food available (check later) or bring your own lunch.     SUNDAY DECEMBER 8  
    SNOWSHOE DOG MOUNTAIN – (MT. SEYMOUR). This is the first snowshoe trip of the season and so we will make it an easy trip for all to enjoy. Round trip is approx 7 kms. If the weather is clear we will have great views overlooking the lower mainland. Please phone Cliff by Friday for time and meeting place.

    FRIDAY DECEMBER 13TH 
    SOCIAL CASUAL BIRDING DYKE WALK 9.00AM-noon. This walk is run by the Regional Park ornithologist and will introduce you to shorebirds, waterfowl and raptors on the walk along the Delta dyke. Bring your binoculars and meet at Cambridge House at Boundary Bay Regional Park. This is a free event.

    SOCIAL CHRISTMAS PANTOMIME Let your hair down and enjoy some real Christmas spirit and British humour at the Metro theatre which is renowned for its Christmas pantomimes written and produced by Johnny Duncan. This year it is Jack and the Beanstalk. You’re welcome to bring your grandchildren or overaged children. The Pathfinders have a limited block booking of seats at $25 each which can be reserved by calling Judith Pilley. Procrastinators will have to order their own seats from the Metro Theatre and take pot luck! Members booking through Judith will meet at the

    SNOWSHOE BLACK MOUNTAIN, (CYPRESS BOWL). Another local favourite workout where we leave the downhill area and head up to Cabin Lake and maybe beyond. Meet at the downhill ski area. Call Larry by Friday night for time. Leader: Larry Burton 604-277-6951

    SUNDAY DECEMBER 22 
    HIKE MILLENIUM TRAIL LADNER. Not enough snow, so let’s have an easy jaunt with 2 pubs on the route.
    This trail starts near Captain’s Cove Marina, goes under Hwy 99 and eventually gets to Deas Island, which we can
    circumnavigate, and then return the same way passing River House pub. Distance about 10km. Flat.
    Take the first exit on right after the tunnel to Ladner River Rd. Turn right on Ferry Rd and meet in the parking lot at
    the end at 10 am.

    SUNDAY JANUARY 5, 2014
    SKI/SNOWSHOE MANNING PARK This is the first ski/snowshoe trip of 2014. Take your pick of skiing on tracks for a modest cost or snowshoe on one of the trails in the park (to be decided depending on snow conditions). We carpool from Tim Horton’s Whatcom Road, Abbotsford at 8.30. Call the leaders by Friday to let them know you are coming.

    TUESDAY JANUARY 14 
     SKI/SNOWSHOE CALLAGHAN VALLEY, WHISTLER. Midweek skiing at Callaghan is now $10 instead of $23, so we will move those trips to Tuesdays. Again your choice is to ski on the many cross country trails in the valley or to head off on the snowshoe trails. We leave from St. David’s Church at 8.30 so please phone the leaders by Sunday to let us know you will be joining us.

    HIKE       LYNN PEAK
    Moderately easy hike from the Lynn Headwaters Regional Park.  Steady upward but not too steep.  Several viewpoints to the east, south, and west as you walk along. Views include those across the Seymour River to Seymour and Elsay mountains. Bring hiking poles and boots that are waterproofed.
    Distance:    7 km    Elevation gain: 700 m.  Time 4 hours
    Meet at 9:00 at the signboard at Lynn Headwaters Regional Park

    SNOWSHOE FIRST PEAK (MT. SEYMOUR) Another chance to head up to the first peak of Mt. Seymour and try your hand (bum) skiing down the upper slopes (optional). Meet in the downhill ski parking lot. Phone by Friday to let Cliff know that you are coming and what time to meet.

    SNOWSHOE PORTIA SECTION KETTLE VALLEY (COQUIHALLA) This trip follows an easy grade up the old Kettle Valley railway. A trip back into history where you will pass the old station of Iago. Meet at Tim Horton’s, Whatcom Road , Abbotsford ready to leave by 8.30.

    SNOWSHOE EAGLE RIDGE (BURKE MOUNTAIN) COQUITLAM Take a trip with Larry to discover some of the old roads and trails on the lower side of Burke Mountain. Please phone Larry by Friday to tell him that you will be joining him and find out more details as to time and meeting place.

    SOCIAL CHINESE DINNER AT THE FLAMINGO. Warren, our host at the Flamingo, has yet again arranged a delicious 10 course meal for us in a private room at the Flamingo restaurant on Cambie. SATURDAY AUGUST 31 CYCLE Strathcona and Chinatown to Lakewood Meeting place is 8th Avenue and Yukon Street at 10.00am. Approx 30kms.We will cycle via Science World through the streets of Chinatown, past heritage homes and several points of interest to The Uprising Bakery lunch stop. Bring your own lunch or purchase from the bakery. Then we continue along Lakewood Cycle Path and return to our meeting place. Please call Thursday evening for more details and to confirm. SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 1 HIKE DEEP COVE TO LYNN CANYON - BADEN POWELL TRAIL. Easy hike, 5 hours, 12 km, 405 m gain. Between urbanity and the forests, we will see big firs and cedars. Meet at public parking lot off Panorama Drive at 9.30am. Need a car at each end. Because this is a long weekend we have planned a local hike to save driving in holiday traffic. SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 8, HIKE HIGH FALLS (Squamish area). After a steep beginning, this scenic hike winds along High Falls Creek and has views of Cloudburst and Squamish River Valley on the way back down a logging road. Round trip 12 km. FRIDAY SEPT 13 SOCIAL BEACHSIDE PICNIC AND ACTIVITIES - Let’s enjoy the last of summer and hopefully an Indian one. Meet by the anchor at the West End of Spanish Bank at 4:00pm. Bring your beach games, bikes, cricket, Frisbees, croquet etc. together with your chairs, utensils, picnic and something to share. SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 29, HIKE PTARMIGAN RIDGE (Mount Baker) This hike takes us as close to Mt. Baker as you can get without being on it. The trail begins at Table mountain parking lot and heads along a ridge to the viewpoints. Distance about 14km, elevation gain 400m, highest point 1,800m, time about 6 hours. (Note: If Ptarmigan Ridge is not accessible then the hike will be to Yellow Aster Butte.) Meet at the Glacier Park Ranger Station at 9.00am. BRING PASSPORTS AND HEALTH INSURANCE. SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 29 CYCLE Deas Island Park to Riefel Bird Sanctuary Approx. 25km ride, largely on-road cycling with some easy off road bits to Riefel Bird Sanctuary. A visit within the Bird Sanctuary is not planned, though on the same way return trip there may be a late season fruit stand or whatever. Driving directions: South on Hwy. 99 to exit 28 take the left hand lane River Road North. 2-3 kms on the left is the signposted Deas Island Regional Park entrance. SUNDAY OCTOBER 6 HIKE ELFIN LAKES (Diamond Head). For many, an old familiar hike to the Elfin Lakes with maybe lots of wonderful fall colors. Distance 22km round trip to Elfin Lakes. SATURDAY OCTOBER 12, HIKE ELK AND THURSTON MOUNTAINS. Alpine meadows, getting into fall colours, views of mountains and valley. Will try for Thurston, another 4km on from Elk Mountain. But potential for a rest at the lunch spot for those who want to take in the views, rather than continue on. Distance 16.5km, elevation gain 1030m. (Note: This is a long weekend, so the hike is planned for Saturday, if Pathfinders prefer Sunday let Sandra know.)Meet at Tim Horton’s Whatcom Road at 8.00am. Call by Friday night. FRIDAY OCTOBER 18 SOCIAL RUSSIA AND THE SILK ROAD SLIDE SHOW. Travel slide shows are always poplar with Pathfinders. Seating is limited so reserve your seat by calling early. This slide show recounts the Pilleys’ land and sea adventures through Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Siberia, Mongolia and China. SUNDAY OCTOBER 13 CYCLE Seymour Conservation Reserve Meet at the Lower S.C.R. parking lot - Rice Lake Gate - at 10.00am. This cycle is 24kms round trip with some elevation gain. Bring a sweater and your lunch. The route is paved with a short section of unpaved trail. We’ll be taking the Seymour Valley Trailway to the River Fish Hatcherry and a picnic spot beside the Seymour River. Possible sightings of deer, bear, cougar and other wildlife. Meet at the Lower S.C.R. parking lot - Rice Lake Gate - at 10.00am. By Car: Take Hwy 1 North Vancouver and exit 22B North Lillooet Road to parking. Also accessible by public transit. SUNDAY OCTOBER 20, HIKE SHANNON FALLS Moderate hike, 4 hours, 5 km return, 450 meter gain. This is short and steep with rewarding views over Howe Sound. Meet at St. David’s Church at 9.30am. Call by Friday night.

SUNDAY OCTOBER 27,
HIKE WHISTLER FLANK TRAIL. This is a hike requiring cars at each end.
The hike starts at Function Junction and ends at the start of the Rainbow
Lake trailhead.It is gently undulating with a few up-hills sections, views of Whistler and
Blackcomb and fall colours. Distance 9km, elevation gain minimal.
Meet at St. David’s church at 8.30am.

HIKE BROHM LAKE INTERPRETIVE FOREST. Rated as intermediate by Vancouver Trails, about 5 hours for 7.5km (depends on trails selected by the leader), only 100m elevation gain. Excellent views and lush forest trails.

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 10, HIKE BUNTZEN LAKE TO SASAMAT RETURN. A good low level hike for this time of year. Start from the south end of Buntzen Lake and circle Sasamat Lake. Distance 11km elevation gain 300m.Meet at the Buntzen Lake parking lot at 9.30am. Leader : Peter Phillips 604-732-4234
WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 20 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING St Mary's Church Boardroom 560 West 14th Ave Vancouver. Time: 1130-1530. There will be a catered lunch, in celebration of a club anniversary (34 years). As usual there will be an AGM, followed by election of officers, and a slide show. Details will follow as they are finalized. FRIDAY NOVEMBER 29 SOCIAL GATHERING AND CHRISTMAS TABLE CREATIONS Join your host Trudie for this industrious social gathering where you can create a spectacular Christmas table decoration (depending on your artistic ability). We will meet at an appointed time to walk and gather cones, grasses etc for our creations, return to our host’s venue for an order of pizza followed by an evening of innovation. This will be a test for Pathfinders to be creative while doing what we do best, talking, eating and drinking. Call your host in good time to find out what materials you will need and let her know what additional nibbles you will be bringing. Space is limited so call early. Safety Equipment.



Cars transporting passengers to snowy/icy destinations should have proper emergency equipment. This should include at a minimum, a flashlight and batteries, a shovel, a tow rope/chain, bag of sand (or some means of adding traction), emergency blanket and first aid kit. (There may be other things that could be added to this list or be optional including candle and matches, axe/saw, food/water etc).

SUNDAY JUNE 2
HIKE OthelloTunnels,Hope- Take a walk back in time and explore the engineering marvel of the Othello Tunnels and enjoy a walk through the woods in the surrounding area. This is a wonderful round trip of approx 15 kms starting on the Kettle Valley trail outside of Hope. We then traverse over the historic Nicola Valley Trail descending to the Coquihalla river where given favourable conditions we can have lunch on the beach before going through the tunnels (bring flash lights) and then walk back along the Kettle Valley Trail to where we left our cars.

SUNDAY JUNE 9
PATHFINDERS TRIATHALON –Hike, Bike and Eat!!

Meet at 10 am at the home of Doug and Sandra in Abbotsford to drop off your food and beverage for the potluck barbecue before heading off for a cycle or hike.  Bring your own meat or fish to grill plus a dish to share. Return in the afternoon for the social followed by an afternoon BBQ.  Members are more than welcome to come just for the social and BBQ, starting at 3pm.  Call hosts to confirm your participation.

CYCLE- Sumas Prairie/Valley (Abbotsford)
.
This 40 m cycle goes from Upper Sumas School (corner of Whatcom & Vye Roads) to Yarrow, where we will eat our lunches in the park before returning to the starting point. We'll cycle over a prairie, once a 30,000 acre lake that was drained and dyked in the 1920,s to develop fertile farmland. Mountain views at every turn. After dropping off your food, meet at Upper Sumas School playing field at 10.15 am. Call both Farenholtzes and Graves by Friday evening for details and confirmation.

HIKE Hozameen Lake Trail We are camping at the (USA) Ross Lake campground on Saturday night. The campground is on the US side of the border. There is free firewood, very few people and clean toilet! Set up camp and then do an easy hike on the Hozameen Trail into Hozameen Lake which is a very pretty lake, there is not much elevation gain. Several kayaks may be available for an evening lake paddle on Ross Lake.

SUNDAY JUNE 16
HIKE The Skagit River Trail winds along the river for as long as we want to go before returning the same route. With any luck we may see some of the wild Rhododendrons in bloom. Meet at the Ross Lake campground around 10:00 Sunday . Let leaders know whether you plan to join the group Saturday morning or Sunday morning for a 10:00 start from the campground.

SUNDAY JUNE 23

HIKE West Side Lynn Creek to Kennedy Falls This is a new route that will lead us to several exceptionally large trees, a grove of ancient cedars and to Kennedy Falls. The route is marked but is a somewhat rough trail so bring hiking poles and make sure your boots are waterproof. And since it is on the mountains of the north shore there will be lots of up as well as slightly up elevation gain. The leaders will attempt to reconnoiter this route before we do it so may have more details. About 4 ½ hours duration. Meet at 9:30 at the end of Mountain Highway. Note parking regulations and park below Coleman Street.

HIKE Jane Lakes via the Black Tusk Microwave Tower Road.   Another new trail for most but reportedly fairly gentle. Depending on how many of the lakes we wish to see (and if we want to do a car at separate ends) the trip can range from 5 – 6 1/2 hours (Note this is an estimate – data available on distance and only general for time in Jack Christies’s Whistler book – although he does give route direction.) CYCLE  Pitt Polder A scenic ride along dikes and roads with a stop for lunch at beautiful Pitt Lake. About 30 km and all flat. Meet at 10:00 am at the parking lot on Harris Road immediately south of the Allouette River Bridge. From Lougheed Hwy turn left on Dewdney Trunk Road just east of Pitt River Bridge and turn left again on Harris Road. Call by Friday night.

HIKE Lindsay Lake (Buntzen Lake Area) This hike has a steep beginning but once on the ridge has been reached the terrain rises and falls as we explore many small lakes before reaching Lindsey Lake. This trail can be done as a loop trail at the top part but you will descend the same way as you ascended. Round trip 15 km, time about 6 hours, elevation gain 1020 metres. Meet at 9:00 at Buntzen Lake parking lot. Call by Friday night.

CYCLE The Poco Trail.
Meet at Colony Farm parking lot at 10.00am and bike the circle route of the Poco Trail that leads us along three rivers with a possible lunch stop at the Hyde Cfreek Hatchery.

HIKE Palmers Pond Coquihalla.
Another overnight camping trip, this time at Jacobson Lake Forestry Camp Site. Jacobson Lake is 45 kms down the Tulameen FS road from Coquihalla Lake exit (easy 2 wheel road). Day 1 we will hike up to Palmers Pond via Conglomerate Flats. This is a fairly easy round trip of approx 10 kms.
TUESDAY JULY 16
 HIKE we will hike out towards Horse Camp and then return, going as far as we want before turning around. If we want to we can always walk into Little Douglas Lake which is on the other side of the Coquihalla on the way home. Meet at Whatcom at 8:00 am.

HIKE High Falls Creek (Squamish)
This is Peter’s favourite hike so from time to time the trip planners let him lead it. (Jack Christie says this is a hike not to be missed so Peter feels affirmed in his star rating.) After a steep beginning, this scenic hike winds along High Falls Creek and has views of Tricouni, Cloudburst and Squamish River Valley on the way back down a logging road. Round Trip 12 km. Elevation gain 640 m. Allow 5 hours. Meet at Upper Levels St. David’s church at 8:30 am. Call by Friday night.

CYCLE East Richmond/New Westminster.
Meet at Richmond Nature Park at 10.00am to cycle through the farmlands of East Richmond and the Middle Arm of the Fraser River. Bring a picnic lunch to eat on the banks of the North Fraser River. The distance is 25/30 kms, no elevation gain except over the highway.
There is one busy section along Westminster Hwy and about 4.5kms of packed gravel. Call by Friday for details and confirmation

HIKE Hannigan Pass (Mount Baker)
An "old dependable" in the Baker area (100 Hikes in North Cascades National Park Region, 3rd. ed.). Pretty easy 13 km (RT) to Hannegan Pass and 16 km (RT) to Hannegan Peak. The first section follows the gradual rise of Ruth creek (with close-up views across the valley to the imposing Nooksack Cirque mountains and snow covered Mt. Ruth in the distance) to a cozy camp ground, then rises to the pass at 6.5 km/610 meters gain. Another 1.5 km/335 meters higher is Hannegan peak with spectacular views of Mt. Baker, Shuksan, and Ruth one way, and the Canadian Peaks opposite. This hike regularly produces bear sightings, but they're well behaved and a treat to observe. HIKE Third Peak Mount Seymour
Note: this hike is on Saturday to allow the Sunday and Monday holidays to be used for other events that might require two days. A local favourite, this hike can be very hot and dry on a sunny day. Bring a lot of water! The trail leads you up steep slopes and around large rocks. It will be the leader’s choice whether to go via Mystery Lake but be assured of panoramic views from any of the three peaks. Round trip is 9 km Elevation gain of 450 metres, high point on third peak is 1453 metres, time about 5 hours. Meet in the Mount Seymour parking lot at 9:00. Call by Friday night.

HIKE Crossover from Three Brothers Trail Fat Dog
Sunday we will start from the Blackwall Peak parking lot and head out on the trail towards the Three Brothers Mountain at which point we will leave the trail (but we will not get lost) and wind our way down to Fat Dog Creek to arrive at our destination in Cambie Creek where we will have cleverly left a car so drivers can return to get the cars left at Blackwell. Round trip 16 km. Elevation gain 1500 ft. Time 5 ½ to 6 hours

HIKE Whistler Peak to Peak and the Musical Bumps
A big winner last year when we did the Blackcomb Mountain trails, this year we will take the Gondola up to the Roundhouse and return to the familiarity of Whistler terrain. We will make the hills come alive with the sound of music as we hike to the low bumps/summits of Piccalo, Flute and Oboe and beyond for those who wish (19 km round trip right to Singing Pass but we can turn back at any of the smaller summits.) The Peak to Peak Gondola can be an added excitement for those who have never done it. Meet at St. David’s church at 8:00 for car pooling. Call by Friday night. If you buy the tickets on line the cost for seniors is $35.95 for the gondola up (and down) and the Peak to Peak gondola.

HIKE Brandywine Falls
A fairly short steep hike with modest elevation gain to a pristine alpine valley. If it is hot, access to the mountain stream should keep everyone cool. If the snow stays late the alpine flowers may still be in bloom. Heaven! Elevation gain 500 metres Distance Round trip 7 km. Time 4 hours. Meet at Upper Levels St. David’s Church at 8:00 am. Car Pool Rates

Out of town, more than an hour away, $20.00. Local, less than one hour away, $10.00.

Pathfinders Guidelines for Participants

1) Phone the trip leader by the Friday before the trip. If you must cancel, do so in plenty of time.
2) Obtain information from the leader to determine if the trip is within your capabilities.
3) Make sure your boots, clothing and equipment are appropriate for the activity.
4) Stay with the group. Make sure the leader or end-person knows where you are at all times, even if you simply step off the trail to answer “nature’s call”

CYCLISTS – REMEMBER YOUR CYCLING PROTOCOL

The BC Provincial Motor Vehicle Act says:-
1)Wear a bicycle helmet of an approved standard.
2)Ride single file on busy roads or highways.
3)Don’t ride on sidewalks unless otherwise posted.
4)Obey crosswalks.
5)Use hand signals for turns, stopping or slowing down.
6)Ride on the right unless turning left or traveling through an intersection with the traffic, where you stay to the right in the through lane.The Pathfinders also say - Please carry tools and an extra bicycle tube!


Safety Equipment.

Cars transporting passengers to snowy/icy destinations should have proper emergency equipment. This should include at a minimum, a flashlight and batteries, a shovel, a tow rope/chain, bag of sand (or some means of adding traction), emergency blanket and first aid kit. (There may be other things that could be added to this list or be optional including candle and matches, axe/saw, food/water etc).

SKI/SNOWSHOE Callahan Valley, Whistler- Meet at St David’s Church in West Vancouver and leave at 8.30 am. We carpool from there. Superb trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing at every level of ability. Trail tickets are $22, snowshoe tickets are $14. If there are 10 or more of us in a group (ski or snowshoe) we get a 15% reduction. Or tickets can be purchased online, no HST.

The lake is 3 km inside the western boundary of Garibaldi Provincial Park. The trail continues along the northern shore with views across the lake to the McBride Range and glaciers in the park. SOCIAL Last Chance- Bowling at the Ridge! - The Ridge is closing shortly after our visit. This will be the last opportunity to have a fun evening at the Ridge bowling. We have reserved 4 lanes (24 people) from 7:30 onwards for Pathfinders. Arrive early to form your teams and rent your shoes. Cost is $2:50 for shoe rental and $10:25 for two games for seniors. Not bad for two hours or fun, activity and entertainment. Beer wine and pops are available for purchase and simple refreshments e.g. hot dogs, nachos, chips plus foods from vending machines. SUNDAY APRIL 21
CYCLE PLANETARIUM - We will meet at the Planetarium, Vanier Park, at 10:00am. We cycle east under Burrard bridge, on a cycle path, and bypass Granville Island. Staying on the Seaside Bicycle Route we pass . the Olympic Village and Science World, then along the shore right to Stanley Park. We follow the Seawall cycle path going counter clockwise around Stanley Park, back to the Seaside Bicycle Route and across Burrard St. Bridge, which takes us back to the Planetarium. The distance is about 25K. The Planetarium now has pay parking but there is on street parking close by, just look out for 'residents only' parking. Lunches are optional as we will be in the West End but if it is a nice day, lunch in Stanley Park would be good.

SNOWSHOE Hollyburn Mountain – Meet at the snowshoe/cross-country ticket office at 10 am, but do not buy tickets. We will not need them. This is a fairly steep climb to begin with, then up to the top of the mountain for lunch. We may be able to bum-ski some of the way down.

HIKE Campbell Valley Park – Meet at 10 am. Enter at 204th St and 8th Ave and park at first parking lot on left. If we circumnavigate the park on the Shaggy Mane trail, distance is 11 km, but shorter options are available. This is an easy hike in gently rolling countryside. Horses have right of way!

HIKE Minnekhada Regional Park – Meet in the parking lot at 10 am. This former estate northwest of Port Coquitlam has a variety of trails including a miniature mountain and a viewing pavilion with a wide outlook over the Pitt River valley.

 CYCLE Fort Langley - This is an approximate 35km. cycle which is flat except for a couple of gentle hills. We will meet at the Derby Reach Regional Park at 10.00am. HIKE Smoke Bluffs Park, Squamish – Meet in the coffee shop of the Adventure Centre in Squamish. When you get to the traffic signal at the entrance to Squamish, turn right and park in the large open space on the right opposite the adventure centre. The hike is about 13 km, and an easy grade except for some steeper pieces during a 20 minute ascent to the lunch spot and view. Call leader for meet times.

HIKE Lakeview Trail, Buntzen Lake – This jewel of a lake was called “Lake Beautiful” until it was renamed for a power company official. Meet at south end of the third (west) parking lot at 10 am. We will cross a floating bridge to the west side of the lake, and then follow an undulating trail to the end of the lake. We can return by a lower trail on the same side or by the east side of the lake.

ANNUAL CLUB PICNIC Deas Island Park – We can exercise in the morning and eat and socialise in the afternoon. The club will provide food and we’ll be asking for volunteers to help put the barbecue together. Call by May 21 so that we know how many to cater for. New feature this year: Hat competition!! Yes, at lunch time we (both women and men) swap our biking helmets or hiking hats for something wild and crazy – and the social committee will have judges on hand to name the most avant-garde hat.
