Pathfinders Guidelines for Participants
1) Phone the trip leader by the Friday before the trip. If you must cancel, do so in plenty of time.

3) Make sure your boots, clothing and equipment are appropriate for the activity.
4) Stay with the group. Make sure the leader or end-person knows where you are at all times, even if you simply step off the trail to answer “nature’s call”

CYCLISTS – REMEMBER YOUR CYCLING PROTOCOL
The BC Provincial Motor Vehicle Act says:-
1)Wear a bicycle helmet of an approved standard.
2)Ride single file on busy roads or highways.
3)Don’t ride on sidewalks unless otherwise posted.
4)Obey crosswalks.
5)Use hand signals for turns, stopping or slowing down.
6)Ride on the right unless turning left or traveling through an intersection with the traffic, where you stay to the right in the through lane.
The Pathfinders also say - Please carry tools and an extra bicycle tube!

DECEMBER
WINTER CYCLING
No firm dates have been set, but when weather permits cyclists are encouraged to contact each other to plan an informal cycling event.

THEATRE NIGHT - 7.30 PM 
Metro Theatre is showing what is described as `a delightful comedy` called My Three Angels. It is set in French Guiana at the turn of the century and is about the interaction between a family of French colonists and three prisoners who help them with the circumstances of their lives. WALK
MINNEKHADA PARK (Coquitlam)
This is a walk around a local regional park followed by a visit to Minnekhada Lodge for hot chocolate in front of their log fire. Christmas decorations will help to get us into a festive mood. Round trip is 6.5 kms. Please phone leader for meeting place and time.

SNOWSHOE/SKI
DIAMOND HEAD, SQUAMISH
- We will leave St. David`s Church in West Vancouver at 8.30am and carpool from there. A nice steady climb up to the Red Heather hut where we will have lunch and then go on up to Paul Ridge for the view. It is a good idea to carry chains because this road can be pretty nasty if the Rangers do not plough it.

- We will meet at the ticket office at 9.30am.

Do not buy trail tickets, we do not need them. We will take the trail up the mountain with a steep climb to begin with, but it flattens out for a while and then gets steep again.

WHISTLER NORDIC CENTRE
- Superb groomed and tracked trails for all levels of competence. There are some hills, but nothing too steep. Ski tickets are $22 each (plus taxes), but a book of 6 tickets is $20.83 each ticket (plus taxes), and a book of 10 is $17.60 each ticket (plus taxes). Snowshoe tickets are $15 each (plus taxes), but a book of 6 tickets is $13.50 each ticket (plus taxes), and a book of 10 is $12.30 each ticket (plus taxes). So the more the merrier, and cheaper. We will leave St. David’s Church at 8.30am and carpool from there.

- We will meet at the downhill ticket office at 10am. Do not buy tickets, we do not need them. Very steep climb, but not too long. If conditions are right we will go on to Eagle Ridge.

KETTLE VALLEY
- We will leave Tim Hortons at 8.30am on Whatcom Road on Highway No. 1 and we will carpool from there. It is an easy grade up and along an old railway track with stunning views and frozen waterfalls. We take the Portia exit on the Coquihalla Highway.

CHEAKAMUS EAST SIDE
- We will leave St. Davids Church at 8.30am in West Vancouver and carpool from there to Function Junction near Whistler. This is an interesting trip along the Cheakmus River, up and over the ridge to Loggers Lake where we will have lunch and then wander back down again.

DAKOTA RIDGE, SUNSHINE COAST
- We will leave St. Davids Church in West Vancouver at 8.15am. From there we will carpool to the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal and catch the 9.20am ferry to Langdale. Only four wheel drive vehicles are allowed on the access road to the ski area. Superb snowshoeing on 8km of trails and glorious skiing on 13km of groomed and tracked trails. Ski trail tickets are $7.50 and snowshoe tickets are $3.50.

We will leave Tim Hortons on Whatcom Road on Highway No. 1 at 8.30am and carpool from there. The financial situation at Manning is a bit iffy, but if all goes well for the Lodge, we will ski Strawberry Flats and the snowshoers can tackle Windy Joe.

HIKE
ILLAL MEADOWS (Coquihalla area)
This trip involves a long steady upward hike but has rewards of small tarns, alpine meadows and incredible views. Much of the walk is along ridges to get to the meadows. Distance 10 kms round trip, elevation gain is 600 metres with a high point of 1870 metres, time 6 hours.

HIKE
MT. SLESSE (Chilliwack Valley)
Hopefully we can reach the site of the 1956 crash of TransCanada’s flight from Vancouver to Calgary. This is an amazingly wild and barren area but at the same time very peaceful. Round trip 12 kms, elevation gain is 860 metres with a high point of 1580 metres. Time 6 hours

CYCLE
EAST RICHMOND/NEW WESTMINSTER
A trip through the farm lands of Eastern Richmond and along the Fraser River, passing strawberry U-pick farms, an ornate Sikh Temple, an especially interesting marina and some residual bog forest. We will lunch at a picnic site on the banks of the Fraser. Distance 30.4 km with no elevation. There is one busy section along Westminster Hwy and about 4.5 km of gravel. Meet at the parking lot of Richmond Nature Park at 10:00 a.m.

Hopefully the snow will be gone in another month and there will be some beautiful fall colors. Bob will lead you on a great hike on the North Shore where with a bit of luck you will have 360 degree views from the Third Peak. HIKE
JULY MOUNTAIN (Coquihalla area)
Again we will try this new hike which was postponed from earlier because of snow) Because both exercise and adapting to change keep you mentally alert here is another new hike. This trail follows an old road and then a trail along Juliet Creek that leads into a rocky bowl that holds Drum Lake, then a meadow before the rounded summit and views in every direction. Distance 9.5 km round trip, elevation gain 717 metres, high point 2125 meters. Time- 6 hours.

POCO TRAIL
This approximately 25 km cycle starts at Colony Farm Regional Park and community gardens, and includes trails along the Coquitlam River, Hyde Creek and Pitt River, at times cycling through residential areas and urban parks. The trip is mostly flat with one section along the highway shoulder. Meet at 10:00 a.m. in the Colony Farm parking lot at the south end of Colony Farm road, which is accessed off Leader: Cliff Kelsey 604-941-2957.

ELFIN LAKES (Diamond Head).
For many, an old familiar hike to the Elfin Lakes with maybe lots of wonderful fall colors. Perhaps some may care to stay overnight and do a hike to Opal Cone the following day – depending on snow conditions. Distance 22km round trip to Elfin Lakes. Elevation gain 760 meters to lakes. Time - 7 hours. Meet at St. David’s church (Upper Levels Hwy). Phone leader for time.

This 22 km cycle (with some hills) winds through towering forests with plenty of viewpoints. Bring lunch. Leave Hwy 1 at exit 22 and drive north on Lillooet Road to its end at the lower Seymour Conservation Reserve parking area, Meet at 10:00 am in the parking lot at Rice Lake. . Fine Views over the North Shore mountains and Lynn Valley. This is another hike that we had to cancel back in June due to the amount of snow. Distance 15 km round trip. BLACK MOUNTAIN TO EAGLE BLUFFS ( North Shore).
Starting from the Cypress downhill ski parking lot we will climb our way up to Cabin Lake and then continue on to Eagle Bluffs where we will have wonderful views looking out over Howe Sound. Please phone Peter for time.

DEAS ISLAND TO BOUNDAY BAY.
This approximately 30 km cycle is flat with the exception of a slight hill on an overpass. Leaving Deas Island we travel straight down 64th to the dyke and carry on to Boundary Bay for lunch. Three-quarters of this ride is on paved roads. If the weather is fine you may choose to return through Ladner which will add a further 5 km. Call by Saturday for details and confirmation.

With an elevation gain of only 300 feet this is a walk rather than a hike. We start at Alice Lake and work our way around to Edith, Fawn and Stump lakes – hopefully finding them all. Meet at St. David’s Church Upper Level (Taylor Way) 9.00am

SUNDAY JUNE 5 HIKE – CHEAKAMUS CANYON (Squamish area) An easy hike all the way to the end of Cheakamus Canyon & back. Eat lunch while watching the raging river and perhaps the CN Rail train wind its way through the Canyon. An early season swim in Starvation Lake is possible for the hardy. SUNDAY JUNE 12 HIKE – HAYWARD LAKE CIRCUIT (Mission area) A longish hike all around the lake. Lots of water views (surprise). This trail follows the old railway grade between Stave Lake & Ruskin. The 10 km Reservoir Trail connects with the 6 km Railway Trail to provide a 16 km walk around Hayward Lake Reservoir. Little elevation gain, it’s around a lake! Time 4 to 5 hours. Meet at Hayward Lake Recreation area off of Dewdney Trunk Road (South of Stave Falls Dam and Powerhouse) at 9.00AM

SUNDAY JUNE 12 CYCLE - FORT LANGLEY. A pleasant 33 km cycle on quiet country roads in Fort Langley. We’ll meet at Fort Langley Historic Part, have a picnic lunch by the river at Glen Valley Park and return to Fort Langley for an ice cream reward. There are a few hills but they can be walked. It will be a leisurely day. Meet at 10:00 a.m.in the parking lot of the historic park on Mavis Avenue. This ride will be in conjunction with the Outsetters Club. Cancelled if raining. SATURDAY JUNE 25 HIKE – GALIANO PUBS AND SHRUBS. Take the Gulf Islands Tswassen ferry for a quick getaway to foreign lands. Then stroll around the rocks of Bellhouse Park on your way to Bluffs Park to view the passing ferries, sea stars and spiraling eagles. Possible walk down to the beach to swing on a local swing. Then on to the Hummingbird Inn for the best part (as some would say) - a pint of cool liquid before catching the ferry back home. Elevation gain minimal. “Distance miles to go before you drink – er sleep”. Time 3-4 hours

SATURDAY JULY 2 (Note Saturday departure to avoid long weekend traffic jams) HIKE - MOUNT MCGUIRE (Fraser Valley). A new hike with a short ascent into beautiful alpine meadows after walking on logging roads to gain the trailhead (some of which may be driven by 4 wheel drive vehicles) A ridge crest leads to a steep final ascent but views are spectacular from any aspect of the ridge. Distance 8 km round trip, elevation gain 659 metres to high point 2019 metres. Time 4 hours. Meet at 9.00 at Whatcom Road Tim Hortons.

SUNDAY JULY 10 HIKE – ELFIN LAKES/OPAL CONE (Whistler area). For many, an old familiar hike to the Elfin Lakes on Sunday. For others a hike plus backpack trip to go to Opal Cone on Monday.Distance 22km round trip to Elfin Lakes, add 13 km to go to the Opal Cone for a different vista. SATURDAY JULY 23 SOCIAL - BARD ON THE BARBIE. Yes you read this right – we will go to the 3pm matinee of the Bard on the Beach performance of “The Merchant of Venice”, and follow it up with a barbecue dinner at a member’s home. We did this last year with great success. They have switched to reserve seating this year, so if you wish to sit with the group, phone Ann Reiner by July 15 and we will order all the tickets at once- cost is $33 per ticket. If you decide to go at the last minute, you can order your own tickets by phoning 604-739-0559. For the barbecue, bring an appetizer, salad or dessert, we will supply burgers and buns.

SUNDAY JULY 24 HIKE – HIGH FALLS (Squamish area). After a steep beginning, this scenic hike winds along High Falls Creek and has views of Tricouni, Cloudburst and Squamish River Valley on the way back down a logging road. Round trip 12 km. Allow 5 hours, elevation gain 640 metres. Meet at Upper levels St. David’s church at 8.30

SUNDAY JULY 24 CYCLE BIRCH BAY, WHATCOM COUNTY USA . After crossing into the US this 40 km cycle follows along the Canada/US border through Blaine and around Birch Bay with its many beaches and lovely water and mountain vistas. We will meet at Peace Arch parking lot, first exit to the right (West) of the Canada Customs at 10:00 a.m. Bring a lunch. BRING PASSPORTS AND MEDICAL INSURANCE. Call by Friday evening for details.

SUNDAY JULY 31 (Long weekend) HIKE – MUNROE AND DENNETT LAKE (Port Coquitlam/Burke Ridge).This relentlessly upward hike has the reward of two mountain lakes for a lunch picnic and possible swim or dip. It also is mainly in the trees to on a hot day remains somewhat cooler than surrounding areas. Time 6 hours, distance 10 km (Munroe Lake – another 2 km to Dennett) elevation gain 860 metres. SUNDAY AUGUST 7 HIKE – MOUNT CHEAM (Fraser Valley area). We will need the four wheel drivers to approach this hike and to take the pain out of getting high. Frolic in the flower filled meadows after completing much of the climb on logging roads. Distance 10 km, elevation gain 665 metres, Time 4.5 hours. Meet at Tim Horton’s, Whatcom Road exit at 08.30.

SUNDAY AUGUST 7 CYCLE SEMIAHMOO PENNINSULA – SOUTH SURREY This 20 - 30 km cycle allows time to enjoy Elgin Heritage Park (Stewart Farmhouse), Nicomekl River and tidal flats, Crescent Beach (bag lunch and ice cream stop), and Crescent Park. SUNDAY AUGUST 14 HIKE – JULY MOUNTAIN (Coquihalla area). Because both exercise and adapting to change helps keep you mentally alert here is another new hike. This trail follows an old road and then a trail along Juliet Creek that leads into a rocky bowl that holds Drum Lake, then a meadow before the rounded summit and views in every direction. Distance 9.5 km round trip, elevation gain 717 metres, time 7 hours

CYCLE - THREE RIVERS RIDE, PITT MEADOWS. We cycle along three different rivers – the Allouette, the Pitt and the Fraser. Distance is about 35 km. Beautiful vistas abound. Meet at 10 am at the parking lot on Harris Road immediately south of the Alouette River Bridge. You can get to Harris Road from the Lougheed Highway. SUNDAY AUGUST 28 HIKE – ILLAL MEADOWS (Coquihalla area). This trip involves a long steady upward hike but has rewards of small tarns, alpine flowers and incredible views. Much of the walk is along ridges to get to the meadows so if there is snow it should not delay us. Distance 10 kms round trip, elevation gain is 600 metres with a high point of 1870 metres, time 6 hours. Meet at Tim Horton’s Whatcom Road for 8.00 am departure.

Car Pool Rates
Out of town, more than an hour away, $20.00. Local, less than one hour away, $10.00.

Pathfinders Guidelines for Participants
1) Phone the trip leader by the Friday before the trip. If you must cancel, do so in plenty of time.
2) Obtain information from the leader to determine if the trip is within your capabilities.
3) Make sure your boots, clothing and equipment are appropriate for the activity.
4) Stay with the group. Make sure the leader or end-person knows where you are at all times, even if you simply step off the trail to answer “nature’s call”

CYCLISTS – REMEMBER YOUR CYCLING PROTOCOL
The BC Provincial Motor Vehicle Act says:-
1)Wear a bicycle helmet of an approved standard.
2)Ride single file on busy roads or highways.
3)Don’t ride on sidewalks unless otherwise posted.
4)Obey crosswalks.
5)Use hand signals for turns, stopping or slowing down.
6)Ride on the right unless turning left or traveling through an intersection with the traffic, where you stay to the right in the through lane.

SUNDAY, MARCH 6 CYCLE BOUNDARY BAY – DELTA This flat 22 km cycle on paved roads and gravel dyke provides you with plenty of ocean and mountain views, tidal flats, lagoons and opportunities to spot shorebirds and waterfowl near lovely Centennial Beach. A bonus for this cycle is a visit to “the Secret Garden”. Meet at the Main Terminal Boundary Bay Airport parking lot that faces Churchill St at 10:00 a.m. Bring a lunch. SNOWSHOE DIAMOND HEAD - We leave St. David's Church in West Vancouver at 8.30am and carpool from there. It is a nice steady climb up to the Red Heather hut where we will have lunch and then on up to Paul Ridge for the view.

SKI/SNOWSHOE CALLAHAN VALLEY - Groomed and tracked trails for all levels of competence. Some hills, but nothing too steep! Ski trail tickets are $20 ($16 if there are 10 or more of us), snowshoe tickets are $8. We'll leave St. David's Church in West Vancouver at 8.30am and carpool from there.

SUNDAY, MARCH 20 CYCLE RICHMOND LOOP – a perennial favorite - we will bike up Granville Ave. to the Shell Rd. Trail, down the trail to the dyke, past Finn Slough, London Farm and the Muakami Boat yard, and back into Steveston for fish and chips at Dave’s. Distance is approximately 30 km. SNOWSHOE FAT DOG MOUNTAIN IN MANNING PARK - We'll leave Tim Horton's at 8.30am on Whatcom Road on Highway #1 and carpool from there. This is a fairly challenging climb of about 800m with a round trip of 14km.

SOCIAL SCOTTISH CEILIDH We had fun last time we did something similar, so come and have another go! This time it is in town at the Scottish Cultural Centre at 8886 Hudson/73rd. It's much the same as before (basically barn dancing with a Scottish flavour) with a caller to guide you along. No partner needed. Cost is $9.00 each - tickets at the door. SNOWSHOE MOUNT ZOA ON THE COQUIHALLA HIGHWAY - We'll leave Tim Horton's at 8.30am on Whatcom Road on Highway #1 and carpool from there. This is a challenging climb of 850m with a round trip of about 18km. There are two long and steep sections on this trip, so make sure to check with Sandra of myself.

CYCLE LADNER TO DEAS ISLAND This 25 – 30 km (approximately) cycle starts in Ladner, goes under Hwy 99 to the other side of the freeway and on to Deas Island Park and some of the many trails there. CYCLE GARRY POINT PARK TO McDONALD BEACH This approximately 30 km cycle takes us on a flat moderate cycle along the East Dyke Trail from Garry Point Park on the south arm of the Fraser to McDonald Beach. We will cycle through Burkeville residential streets and secondary Vancouver International Airport roads, where the traffic is generally low in volume. McDonald Beach Park is where we will have a picnic lunch. Meet at Garry Point parking lot, just west of the Old Cannery in Steveston at 10:00 a.m. Bring a lunch. I have spoken to the manager and he has agreed to give us the same ten delicious dishes we had last year for an all-in price of $21.00 per head. ($1.00 more this year for the HST). CYCLE DEAS ISLAND PARK TO BOUNDARY BAY This cycle trip on paved secondary roads, with generally light traffic, leaves Deas Island, encircles Burns Bog, passes through a tunnel under Highway 99 and ends along the beautiful Boundary Bay Dyke.
