PATHFINDERS CALENDAR OF EVENTS

Please note that Pathfinders Events are open to members in good standing who have completed an application and release form. Guests accompanying a member do so at their own risk.




Car Pool Rates
Out of town, more than an hour away, $20.00. Local, less than one hour away, $10.00.

Pathfinders Guidelines for Participants
1) Phone the trip leader by the Friday before the trip. If you must cancel, do so in plenty of time.
2) Obtain information from the leader to determine if the trip is within your capabilities.
3) Make sure your boots, clothing and equipment are appropriate for the activity.
4) Stay with the group. Make sure the leader or end-person knows where you are at all times, even if you simply step off the trail to answer “nature’s call”

CYCLISTS – REMEMBER YOUR CYCLING PROTOCOL
The BC Provincial Motor Vehicle Act says:-
1)Wear a bicycle helmet of an approved standard.
2)Ride single file on busy roads or highways.
3)Don’t ride on sidewalks unless otherwise posted.
4)Obey crosswalks.
5)Use hand signals for turns, stopping or slowing down.
6)Ride on the right unless turning left or traveling through an intersection with the traffic, where you stay to the right in the through lane.
The Pathfinders also say - Please carry tools and an extra bicycle tube!

SUNDAY, MARCH 7
SNOWSHOE POLAND LAKE IN MANNING PARK - We'll leave Tim Horton's at 8.30am on Whatcom Road on Highway #1 and we will carpool from there. We need to know who is coming by Wednesday in order to arrange a ride on the chairlift ($5). From there we will snowshoe into Poland Lake, have lunch on the snow and then snowshoe back down to Strawberry Flats. Not a hard trip, good for everyone.

SUNDAY MARCH 07

CYCLE RICHMOND BUDDHIST TEMPLE. This new cycle takes us through Richmond stopping at the Buddhist Temple on Steveston Road for a vegetarian lunch in the temple. Built like a palace based on the Forbidden City, it houses Chinese paintings, calligraphy and statues. Check with the leaders regarding a donation or fee. In advance, you can check out the temple online at www.buddhisttemple.ca. Meet at the Thompson Community Centre parking lot (corner of Granville Ave. and Lynas Lane) at 10:00 a.m. Don’t bring a lunch. Call by Friday for details and confirmation.

FRIDAY, MARCH 12
SOCIAL QUIZ NIGHT - 7.30 P.M. Come and try your luck and win a fabulous prize (?!). Alan (our champion at several of these events) will be away, so the rest of us have a chance at winning! Don't worry about what you don't know - most of us don't score much, but we have a lot of fun trying. Bring your usual goodies and drinks.

SNOWSHOE FAT DOG MOUNTAIN IN MANNING PARK We'll leave Tim Horton's at 8.30am on Whatcom Road on Highway #1 and we will carpool from there. This is a fairly challenging climb of about 800m and about 14km in distance.

SUNDAY, MARCH 21
SKI/SNOWSHOE DIAMOND HEAD, NEAR SQUAMISH We'll leave St. David's Church in West Vancouver at 8.30am. We carpool from there. This is a favourite trip that we normally do in December, but no snow, so we are trying once again. We'll go up to the Red Heather hut, have lunch in there and then head on up to Paul Ridge and the Lookout.

SUNDAY MARCH 21

CYCLE GARRY POINT PARK TO IONA BEACH This 30-40 km cycle takes us on a flat, moderate cycle along the East Dyke Trail from Garry Point Park on the south arm of the Fraser River to Iona Beach Park and Jetty. We will cycle through Burkeville residential streets and secondary Vancouver International Airport roads, where the traffic is generally low in volume. McDonald Beach Park is where we will have a picnic lunch. Meet at Garry Point parking lot, just west of the Old Cannery in Steveston at 10:00 a.m. Bring a lunch. SOCIAL TIME FOR CHINESE FOOD - 6.30 P.M. Tonight we are going back to the Flamingo Restaurant, 7510 Cambie Street. I have arranged for five courses, plus tea or coffee, tax and tip included for $20.00 per head. We had great value for our money last time, and I'm sure it will be as good again. Call by March 22nd latest to reserve.

SNOWSHOE
MOUNT ZOA ON THE COQUIHALLA HIGHWAY We'll leave Tim Horton's at 8.30am on Whatcom Road on Highway#1 and we will carpool from there. This is a challenging climb of about 850m and about 18km in distance. There are two very long and steep sections on this trip, so make sure to check with either Sandra or myself.

CYCLE VANCOUVER DOWNTOWN (NORTH) ART TOUR

This is another new cycle that follows one of the Public Art in Vancouver (2009) tours on page one. This book was written by our very own Pathfinder, Aileen Stalker, and co-writer John Steil. The tour takes us through the northern section of Vancouver where we will be viewing art from a variety of viewpoints – sculptures, murals, hangings, Gitxsan poles, mosaics, not to mention the famous bronze bull – many pieces of art that you may have missed over the years. We will meet at the Planetarium parking lot at 10:00 a.m. Bring a lunch. Call by Friday for details and confirmation.

HIKE MT. GARDNER – Moderate hike, elevation gain 500m; high point 720m; distance 10km from trailhead (3km further to the ferry); time 6 hours. Phone early so that we can decide how many cars to take over.

HIKE NORVAN FALLS – Moderate hike, 13.5km; elevation gain minimal, high point 375m; 5 to 6 hours.

CYCLE WESTHAM & DELTA’S WESTERN DYKE

This 30 km. cycle is an old favourite that starts in Ladner and takes us along River Road to the Reifel Bird Sanctuary (lunch spot), then circles back along Canoe Pass to Brunswick Point and Delta’s western dyke to Ladner. Along the way we’ll pass berry farms, wildlife habitats, bird viewing stations and view of Roberts Bank coal port. We will meet in Ladner on the north side of Memorial Park, 47th Avenue at the intersection of Delta Street at 10:00 a.m. Bring a lunch. Call by Friday for details and information. SOCIAL A NIGHT AT THE THEATRE - 7.30 P.M.
Metro Theatre is performing a comedy called "Opening Night". Tickets are $15.00 for seniors, $18.00 for everyone else. Call by April 16 latest if you wish to go.

HIKE DIEZ VISTAS – Elevation gain 1020 m. Distance 15km. Time 6 hours. High Point is 607 m. (1990 ft.) This trail runs along and above Indian Arm. As a result of the master trail builder Halvor Lunden, you are offered 10 splendid lookouts and give you views of Vancouver, Seymour Mountain and Indian Arm.

HIKE STAWAMUS SQUAW. – 15km, moderate hike; elevation gain 540m, high point 630m; 6 hours.

SUNDAY MAY 2 C YCLE POCO TRAIL COQUITLAM/PORT COQUITLAM This 30km.cycle takes us on a mostly flat , unpaved trail and dyke, with one section along the highway shoulder (light traffic). Highlights include Colony Farm Regional Park and community gardens, Coquitlam and Pitt Rivers, Reeve and Lions Parks, and Hyde Creek Nature Reserve. We will meet at Colony Farm parking lot at the end of the road : from Lougheed Highway (Hwy.7) turn south on Colony Farm Road and drive 1.2 km. to the parking lot at the end. Bring a lunch. SOCIAL AN EVENING OF MUSIC - 7.30 P.M.
Canby will be at the piano and Doug Rogerson will be playing his guitar. They will be entertaining us with all kinds of old favourites. You can sing along or just sit back and enjoy the music. It should be a great evening. Bring your goodies and drinks as usual.

SUNDAY MAY 16 HIKE HOLLYBURN PEAK - A moderate hike along a good trail to the top of Hollyburn Mountain. Expansive views in every direction. Distance 11 km. Elevation gain 1325 m, time 6.5 hours Leader : Tony Keen 604-275-2970

SUNDAY MAY 23 CYCLE THREE RIVERS RIDE, PITT MEADOWS We have biked this route only twice before, and we all loved it!! We cycle along three different rivers – the Allouette, the Pitt and the Fraser. Distance is around 35 km. and it is flat. Beautiful vistas all around. Meet at 10:00 a.m. in the parking lot on Harris Road, immediately south of the Alouette River Bridge. CLUB PICNIC - DEAS ISLAND PARK-

10 A.M. It’s that time of year again, so come on out for a gourmet barbecue - sausages, salads, etc. and as usual, it’s on the Club. Hiking or biking in the morning, eating, games and socializing in the afternoon. Make sure that you phone Alan by 8 am Friday morning, so that enough food will be prepared.

BIKE DEAS ISLAND TO BOUNDARY BAY This cycle trip on paved secondary roads, with generally light traffic, leaves Deas Island, encircles Burns Bog, passes through a tunnel under Highway 99 and ends along the beautiful Boundary Bay Dyke Meet: 10:00 a.m. at the Deas Island Picnic Site (west end).
