PATHFINDERS CALENDAR OF EVENTS

Winter 2009 – 2010

Please note that Pathfinders Events are open to members in good standing who have completed an application and release form. Guests accompanying a member do so at their own risk.




Car Pool Rates
Out of town, more than an hour away, $20.00. Local, less than one hour away, $10.00.

Pathfinders Guidelines for Participants
1) Phone the trip leader by the Friday before the trip. If you must cancel, do so in plenty of time.
2) Obtain information from the leader to determine if the trip is within your capabilities.
3) Make sure your boots, clothing and equipment are appropriate for the activity.
4) Stay with the group. Make sure the leader or end-person knows where you are at all times, even if you simply step off the trail to answer “nature’s call”

CYCLISTS – REMEMBER YOUR CYCLING PROTOCOL
The BC Provincial Motor Vehicle Act says:-
1)Wear a bicycle helmet of an approved standard.
2)Ride single file on busy roads or highways.
3)Don’t ride on sidewalks unless otherwise posted.
4)Obey crosswalks.
5)Use hand signals for turns, stopping or slowing down.
6)Ride on the right unless turning left or traveling through an intersection with the traffic, where you stay to the right in the through lane.
The Pathfinders also say - Please carry tools and an extra bicycle tube!

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4
SOCIAL CHRISTMAS DINNER AND DANCE Once again we are going back to the Kinsmen Rec Centre in Tsawwassen for a great evening of dinner and dancing. There will be a salad bar, turkey dinner with all the veggies and trimmings, brandied mince tarts, buns, coffee and tea and dancing to live music. The cost is $30.00 per person. Bar opens at 6 p.m and dinner is at approx. 6.30 p.m. If you plan to come you must phone me (or register and pay at the AGM) before November 27. I have to pay for the tickets on that day. There will definitely be no more tickets available after that date.

DECEMBER CYCLING SCHEDULE

No firm dates have been set for December but information on weather-dependent cycling Sundays will be provided to Pathfinder cyclists by email and telephone.

SKI/SNOWSHOE MANNING PARK - Leave Tim Horton's on Whatcom Road at 8.30 am on Highway #1 and we'll carpool from there. Easy trails, good for everyone especially beginners.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 13
SNOWSHOE DIAMOND HEAD, SQUAMISH - Leave St. David's Church in West Vancouver at 8.30 am and carpool from there. Nice steady climb up to the Red Heather hut where we will have lunch and then go on up to Paul Ridge for the view.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 20
SNOWSHOE HOLLYBURN MOUNTAIN - Meet at the ticket office at 9.30 am. Do not buy tickets, we do not need them. We will take the trail up the mountain. Steep climb to begin with, but it flattens out for a while then gets steep again.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 27
SNOWSHOE DOG MOUNTAIN ON MOUNT SEYMOUR - Meet at the lower floor of the cafeteria at 9.30 am. Do not buy tickets, we do not need them. An easy comfortable snowshoe ideal for beginners and fun for the old hands. Lovely view on a clear day.

SOCIAL New Year's Eve Potluck - 8.OO P.M
Let's get together and send the old year out with a bang! (At least, we can make it a great potluck dinner!). Call and let me know what you would like to bring so that we can make it a really interesting meal. BYOB.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 1

CYCLE POLAR BEAR SWIM - An easy cycle to English Bay to watch the fun, then cycle around Stanley Park Seawall and back to the Planetarium. Distance approximately 15 km (4-5 hours). Meet at the Planetarium in Vanier Park (parking lot). Time 11:00 a.m., one hour later than the usual start time in case you had a late night. Call by Wednesday evening for details and confirmation.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 3
SNOWSHOE GROUSE MOUNTAIN - We'll meet at the Gondola at 9.30 am. Passes are $37.00 each. From the top we will take the Thunderbird Ridge trail. Steep in places but well worth the effort for the views.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 10

CYCLE VANCOUVER BAKERY TOUR An “eat to ride or ride to eat” cycle past some of Vancouver’s tastiest bakeries and purveyors of dessert items (Bicycling Vancouver, Cycle #15) Distance 25 km. (4-5 hours). Meet at the Planetarium parking lot in Vanier Park. Time 10 a.m. Call by Friday evening for details and confirmation.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 10
SKI/SNOWSHOE CALLAHAN VALLEY, WHISTLER - Groomed and tracked ski trails for all levels of competence. There are some hills, but not too steep. Ski trail tickets are $20.00 each, snowshoe tickets are $8.00 each. We'll leave St. David's Church in West Vancouver at 8.30 am. We carpool from there.

SOCIAL Wacky Tacky party - 7.30 p.m.
Time to dust off those treasures you've been saving just for this occasion. Bring them out again for an evening of fun and nonsense. Bring your tasty nibblies and whatever you want to drink.

SNOWSHOE/SKI THE KETTLE VALLEY ON THE COQUIHALLA - We will leave Tim Horton's at Whatcom Road on Highway #1 at 8.30 am. We carpool from there. An easy grade up and along an old railway track with stunning views and frozen waterfalls.

SOCIAL Slide night 7.30 p.m.
Sabina Harpe did a most interesting hike last year - the Santiago de Compostela pilgrim trail in Spain. She will be showing us her pictures and answering questions about this challenging endeavour. Don't miss this one.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 31
SKI/SNOWSHOE MOUNT BAKER - We'll leave Tim Horton's at Whatcom Road on Highway #1 at 8.30 am. We carpool from there. Silver Fir is a groomed and tracked undulating trail, nothing steep or too challenging. Make sure you have your passport and take out insurance for the day.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 7

UBC, SPANISH BANKS, FALSE CREEK CIRCUIT – a good work-out to prepare for the Spring cycling schedule. We will be stopping for lunch at Granville Island. Distance 30+ kms. (4-5 hours) Meet at the Kinney’s home. Time 10:00 a.m. Call by Friday evening for details and confirmation.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 7
SKI/SNOWSHOE DAKOTA RIDGE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST - We'll leave St. David's Church in West Vancouver at 8.15 am. We will carpool from there to the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal and catch the 9.20 am ferry to Langdale. Only four wheel or all wheel drive vehicles are allowed on the access road to the ski area. Superb snowshoeing and groomed and tracked trails for skiing. Tickets are $5.00 each at least.

SOCIAL An evening of laughter - 7.30 p.m.
They say laughter is the best medicine, so let's give ourselves a shot in the arm during these dull winter days. Think about your most embarrassing moment that was actually quite funny when you thought about it after the event and share it with us. Or bring your funny stories (clean ones!), tall tales or amusing things you have read, and let's get a good giggle going! All the while enjoying our tasty nibblies and drinks.

SKI/SNOWSHOE MONUMENT 83 IN MANNING PARK - We'll leave Tim Horton's on Whatcom Road on Highway #1 at 8.30 am. We carpool from there. Mostly a climb with three short steep sections.

SKI/SNOWSHOE Artist Point ON MOUNT BAKER - We'll leave Tim Horton's on Whatcom Road on Highway #1 at 8.30 am. We carpool from there. Hannegan Pass is a steady climb with some superb views if we reach the top, snow conditions willing. Make sure you have your passport and take out insurance for the day.

Let's warm ourselves up with some tasty Indian food. The buffet at the New India Restaurant at
805 West Broadway offers lots of choice at $14.95 per head. If you're not sure about Indian food, now is your opportunity to try a taste of different things. Call me to reserve by February 22.
