Please note that Pathfinders Events are open to members in good standing who have completed an application and release form. Guests accompanying a member do so at their own risk.

Out of town, more than an hour away, $20.00. Local, less than one hour away, $10.00.

Pathfinders Guidelines for Participants
1) Phone the trip leader by the Friday before the trip. If you must cancel, do so in plenty of time.
2) Obtain information from the leader to determine if the trip is within your capabilities.
3) Make sure your boots, clothing and equipment are appropriate for the activity.
4) Stay with the group. Make sure the leader or end-person knows where you are at all times, even if you simply step off the trail to answer “nature’s call”

CYCLISTS – REMEMBER YOUR CYCLING PROTOCOL
The BC Provincial Motor Vehicle Act says:-
1)Wear a bicycle helmet of an approved standard.
2)Ride single file on busy roads or highways.
3)Don’t ride on sidewalks unless otherwise posted.
4)Obey crosswalks.
5)Use hand signals for turns, stopping or slowing down.
6)Ride on the right unless turning left or traveling through an intersection with the traffic, where you stay to the right in the through lane.
The Pathfinders also say - Please carry tools and an extra bicycle tube!

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4
SOCIAL CHRISTMAS DINNER AND DANCE Once again we are going back to the Kinsmen Rec Centre in Tsawwassen for a great evening of dinner and dancing. There will be a salad bar, turkey dinner with all the veggies and trimmings, brandied mince tarts, buns, coffee and tea and dancing to live music. The cost is $30.00 per person. Bar opens at 6 p.m and dinner is at approx. 6.30 p.m. If you plan to come you must phone me (or register and pay at the AGM) before November 27. I have to pay for the tickets on that day. There will definitely be no more tickets available after that date.

SKI/SNOWSHOE MANNING PARK - Leave Tim Horton's on Whatcom Road at 8.30 am on Highway #1 and we'll carpool from there. Easy trails, good for everyone especially beginners.

SNOWSHOE DIAMOND HEAD, SQUAMISH - Leave St. David's Church in West Vancouver at 8.30 am and carpool from there. Nice steady climb up to the Red Heather hut where we will have lunch and then go on up to Paul Ridge for the view.

SNOWSHOE HOLLYBURN MOUNTAIN - Meet at the ticket office at 9.30 am. Do not buy tickets, we do not need them. We will take the trail up the mountain. Steep climb to begin with, but it flattens out for a while then gets steep again.

SNOWSHOE DOG MOUNTAIN ON MOUNT SEYMOUR - Meet at the lower floor of the cafeteria at 9.30 am. Do not buy tickets, we do not need them. An easy comfortable snowshoe ideal for beginners and fun for the old hands. Lovely view on a clear day.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 1

CYCLE POLAR BEAR SWIM - An easy cycle to English Bay to watch the fun, then cycle around Stanley Park Seawall and back to the Planetarium. Distance approximately 15 km (4-5 hours). Meet at the Planetarium in Vanier Park (parking lot). Time 11:00 a.m., one hour later than the usual start time in case you had a late night. Call by Wednesday evening for details and confirmation.

SNOWSHOE GROUSE MOUNTAIN - We'll meet at the Gondola at 9.30 am. Passes are $37.00 each. From the top we will take the Thunderbird Ridge trail. Steep in places but well worth the effort for the views.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 10

CYCLE VANCOUVER BAKERY TOUR An “eat to ride or ride to eat” cycle past some of Vancouver’s tastiest bakeries and purveyors of dessert items (Bicycling Vancouver, Cycle #15) Distance 25 km. (4-5 hours). Meet at the Planetarium parking lot in Vanier Park. Time 10 a.m. Call by Friday evening for details and confirmation.

SKI/SNOWSHOE CALLAHAN VALLEY, WHISTLER - Groomed and tracked ski trails for all levels of competence. There are some hills, but not too steep. Ski trail tickets are $20.00 each, snowshoe tickets are $8.00 each. We'll leave St. David's Church in West Vancouver at 8.30 am. We carpool from there.

SNOWSHOE/SKI THE KETTLE VALLEY ON THE COQUIHALLA - We will leave Tim Horton's at Whatcom Road on Highway #1 at 8.30 am. We carpool from there. An easy grade up and along an old railway track with stunning views and frozen waterfalls.

Sabina Harpe did a most interesting hike last year - the Santiago de Compostela pilgrim trail in Spain. She will be showing us her pictures and answering questions about this challenging endeavour. Don't miss this one.

SKI/SNOWSHOE MOUNT BAKER - We'll leave Tim Horton's at Whatcom Road on Highway #1 at 8.30 am. We carpool from there. Silver Fir is a groomed and tracked undulating trail, nothing steep or too challenging. Make sure you have your passport and take out insurance for the day.

UBC, SPANISH BANKS, FALSE CREEK CIRCUIT – a good work-out to prepare for the Spring cycling schedule. We will be stopping for lunch at Granville Island. Distance 30+ kms. (4-5 hours) Meet at the Kinney’s home. Time 10:00 a.m. Call by Friday evening for details and confirmation.

SKI/SNOWSHOE DAKOTA RIDGE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST - We'll leave St. David's Church in West Vancouver at 8.15 am. We will carpool from there to the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal and catch the 9.20 am ferry to Langdale. Only four wheel or all wheel drive vehicles are allowed on the access road to the ski area. Superb snowshoeing and groomed and tracked trails for skiing. Tickets are $5.00 each at least.

SOCIAL An evening of laughter - 7.30 p.m.
They say laughter is the best medicine, so let's give ourselves a shot in the arm during these dull winter days. Think about your most embarrassing moment that was actually quite funny when you thought about it after the event and share it with us. Or bring your funny stories (clean ones!), tall tales or amusing things you have read, and let's get a good giggle going! All the while enjoying our tasty nibblies and drinks.

Hannegan Pass is a steady climb with some superb views if we reach the top, snow conditions willing. Make sure you have your passport and take out insurance for the day.

SEPTEMBER SOCIALS
Since so many of our "socializers" will be away in September (12 that I personally know of), we have decided to leave the month of September blank this year.

SEPTEMBER HIKES For all hikes during the month of September please contact Larry on or before the Thursday prior to the Sunday hike. Then depending on the weather and number of people hiking the decision will be made as to where to go. The reason for this is because many of the regular hikers are going to be away at this time.

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 13 CYCLE LOWER SEYMOUR CONSERVATION RESERVE – NORTH VANCOUVER
This 35 km cycle winds through towering forests with plenty of view points, stopping at Rice Lake and ending at the Seymour Dam and Hatchery. To get to the Reserve, take exit 22 from Highway 1 at the north end of the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Bridge. A large green GVRD sign, at the intersection of the parkway and Lillooet Rd., points straight ahead on Lillooet Rd to the Reserve (Seymour Demonstration Forest). SUNDAY OCTOBER 4 HIKE CHAIN LAKES (MOUNT BAKER) This hike has a high point of 1646 metres with elevation gain of 457 metres and a distance of 9.65 kilometres. The route makes a fairly level traverse around Table Mountain dropping down and passing small lakes, then climbing to go through the saddle and back to the return road to parking lot. Approximately 4 hours length. Meet at the ranger station in Glacier at 9.00. Remember passport and health insurance.

SUNDAY OCTOBER 4
CYCLE CENTRALVALLEY GREENWAY - SCIENCE WORLD TO BURNABY & NEW WESTMINSTER QUAY This brand new cycle route, 48 km return, is a first time cycle for the Pathfinders, and links Vancouver, Burnaby and New Westminster. The route varies from being a separated urban greenway in some areas, to either a rural recreational trail or a parallel trail to the railway corridor, or the edge of an industrial roadway. It has been rated as recreational, intermediate, and safe. We’ll have lunch at New Westminster Quay. Meet at 10:00 a.m. at 1st and Main. Call by Friday evening for details and confirmation. HIKE ELFIN LAKES (DIAMOND HEAD) Round trip is 22 kilometres with an elevation gain of 600 metres. This is a wonderful hike at this time of year because of the fall colours. From Paul Ridge you should have views of the Tantalus Range as well as Mount Garibaldi. Meeting place at St. David’s church Taylor Way. Please contact Larry for time.

SUNDAY OCTOBER 18 HIKE HIGH FALLS CREEK (SQUAMISH) Round trip is 12 kilometres with an elevation gain of 640 metres. Another hike that is requested every year. Rocks to scramble over, bright green moss gardens and the falls themselves. We will meet at St. David’s church at Taylor Way at 9.00 am. Leader: Bob Spencer 604-980-2187

SUNDAY OCTOBER 18 CYCLE GARY POINT – RICHMOND LOOP This 25 km loop cycle starts at Gary Point, then follows along Richmond’s picturesque dyke trail before looping back via No. 6 Rd. and Shell Rd. From Shell Rd the cycle continues through the urban forest trail to Dyke Rd. beside the S. Arm Fraser River. We’ll re-visit London Farm, Finn’s Slough, and London Landing where we will stop for a later lunch (bring snacks). Depending on the weather, lunch could be your own packed lunch to eat on the Landing, or a stop at the Diplomat Bakery for their tasty sandwiches and fabulous desserts. SUNDAY NOVEMBER 1 HIKE HECTOR FERGUSON LAKE (GOLDEN EARS PARK)
We follow Gold Creek for as long as we wish, passing by deep pools and sandbars. This is a low level hike that can be done by everyone. Please contact leaders by Friday for time and meeting place. Please note the clocks go back this weekend. Leaders: Doug & Sandra Farenholtz 1-604-855-3310

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 1 CYCLE PLANETARIUM, STANLEY PARK, LIONS GATE TO LONSDALE QUAY LOOP This 25-30 km cycle takes us over the Burrard St. Bridge, through beautiful Stanley Park where we eventually connect with the Lions Gate Bridge. Plenty of views! Once over the bridge, we’ll cycle along the North Shore through residential and commercial areas, ending at the Lonsdale Quay for lunch (bring your own, or purchase a lunch at the market). Back to Vancouver by Seabus, where we’ll meander along bicycle lanes and paths to the Burrard St. Bridge again, and return to the Planetarium. Meet at 10:00 a.m. in the Planetarium Parking Lot. SUNDAY NOVEMBER 8 HIKE BLACK MOUNTAIN (CYPRESS) This is a steepish climb up to Cabin Lake where we have the option to continue out to Eagle Bluffs or enjoy the views, have lunch and come back to the parking lot. SUNDAY NOVEMBER 8 CYCLE THREE RIVERS RIDE, PITT MEADOWS We tried this route for the first time last fall, and we all loved it!! We cycle along three different rivers – the Allouette, the Pitt and the Fraser. Distance is around 35 km. and it is flat. Meet at 10:00 a.m. in the parking lot on Harris Road, immediately south of the Alouette River Bridge. You can get to Harris Rd. from the Lougheed Highway 7. Executive Meeting, 7.30 pm.

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 15 HIKE BUNTZEN LAKE.
Meet 9.30 Buntzen Lake car park
We will cross the floating bridge and walk up and over Buntzen Ridge and down to Sasamat Lake, then around Woodhaven Marsh before continuing around Sasamat Lake and back to Buntzen Lake.
Some climbing up and over the ridge but all in all an easy hike. Keep your fingers crossed for a dry day.

NOVEMBER 20, ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING -7.00 P.M.
Another year has rolled around and it's time again for the annual general meeting – a time for making plans regarding our club, and a chance to meet up with the members that you don't often see. There will be a presentation by Leon Lebrun of Trails B.C. which promises to be very interesting. BYOB, coffee mugs and munchies.

HIKE UBC KNAPP RESEARCH FOREST
A low level hike (in case the snow is still lingering) will take us to an elevation height of 685 metres and elevation gain (at a very gentle increase in grade) of 610 metres. Round trip is 15.5 km for a shorter route and 23 km if we go beyond the lookout to the farthest lakes in the forest.
Meet at the Parking lot at the end of Silver Valley Road at 9:30. Directions available from leader.

HIKE MOUNT FROMME (NORTH SHORE)
Fine views over the north shore mountains and Lynn Valley with a round trip of 15 km. Elevation gain 866 metres with a high point of 3842 metres.

SUNDAY JUNE 21

HIKE MOUNT GARDNER (BOWEN ISLAND)
A vigorous hike led by someone who has timed every step. This is important to allow for coffee and tea after arriving on the island, and pub time and/or an ice cream before the departing late afternoon ferries. Great views over Howe Sound but don’t get lost on the way down. Distance 10 km and 500 m elevation gain. Phone leader for details of ferry and meeting place.

CYCLE SEMIAHMOO PENNINSULA – SOUTH SURREY
This 20 plus km cycle allows time to enjoy Elgin Heritage Park (Stewart Farmhouse), Nicomekl River and tidal flats, Crescent Beach (bag lunch and ice cream stop), and Crescent Park. We will meet at Bakerview Park parking lot (154th Street, half a block south of 20th Avenue) at 10:00 a.m. Call by Friday evening for details and confirmation.

SOCIAL THEATRE NIGHT 7.30 p.m.
Tonight's show at Metro Theatre is "Enchanted April" - a tale of two housewives who seek adventure in France. "Laughter and romance - nominated for best play of 2003". Tickets $13.00 for seniors, $16.00 for youngsters. Call by June 19 to reserve.

SUNDAY JUNE 28
HELM LAKE - WHISTLER Meet at St. David's church (Taylor Way) ready to leave at 8.30 and from there we will carpool up to the Cheakamus Lake road and hike up to Garibaldi Park from the back side. If we were to make it all the way to Helm Lake it would be a 20 km round trip with a 3,000 ft elevation gain, however I expect we will run into snow before then. SUNDAY JUNE 28
CYCLE GARY POINT TO IONA BEACH
This 30-40 km cycle takes us on a flat, moderate cycle along the East Dyke Trail from Garry Park on the south Arm of the Fraser River to Iona Beach Park and Jetty. HIKE Mt. Benedict
A climb through forest, along logging roads, past a mountain lake and on to the ridge and the summit where the views of surrounding mountains are spectacular. This hike can be very dry in hot weather - bring lots of water. Elevation gain 1250 metres, distance, 14.5 km., time 7 hours. Call leader for meeting place and times.

CYCLE PITT MEADOWS TO FORT LANGLEY
This 44 km cycle takes us along the Allouette River dyke through the community of Haney, and on to historic Fort Langley using the Albion Ferry. This will be the last opportunity to take the Albion Ferry before it is taken out of service. Memories in the making! This picturesque ride has plenty of water and mountain vistas. We’ll have a picnic lunch in Fort Langley’s local park and have time for an ice cream. We will meet at the parking lot where Harris Road crosses the Allouette River at 10:00 a.m. Call by Friday evening for details and confirmation.

HIKE ILLAL MEADOWS (COQUIHALLA)
With any luck this new hike will take us to views of early alpine flowers. The round trip is 10 kilometres over a six hour period. Elevation gain is 600 metres with a high point of 1870 metres so late snow patches may be present. Much of the walk is along ridges to get to the meadow so if there is snow is should not delay us. Meet at Whatcom Tims’ for 8:00 departure

HIKE PANORAMA RIDGE/HELM LAKE (WHISTLER)
We will take the familiar switchbacks to Taylor meadow and then see how far we get towards Panorama Ridge which involves hiking north of Mimulus Lake. We may choose a shorter hike to Helm Lake instead. Anything is possible - energy and weather will dictate an alternative to Garibaldi Lake. For those wanting to make a backpack trip out of the hike we will need to organize the cars to accommodate this. Meet at Upper Levels Church at 8:00

CYCLE BOUNDARY BAY – DELTA
This flat 22 km cycle on paved roads and gravel dyke provides you with plenty of ocean and mountain views, tidal flats, lagoon, opportunities to spot shorebirds and waterfowl near lovely Centennial Beach. A bonus of this cycle is a visit to The Secret Garden. Bring a lunch. After crossing into the US, this 40 km cycle follows along the Canada/US border through Blaine and around Birch Bay with its many beaches and lovely water and mountain vistas. HIKE Conway Peak (Fraser Valley South) - used to be called the Lucky Four Mine.
Meet at Tim Horton's (Whatcom Road exit - Hwy 1) 8.30am
This hike was originally scheduled for last Sunday, however, we postponed it because of the Abbotsford airshow and traffic issues.
Hike 65 of the 6th edition of 103 hikes. We will not go the full distance but regardless of how far we hike there are wonderful views of glaciers and mountains to the East of Cheam.

CYCLE BURNABY/SOUTH VANCOUVER/FRASER FORESHORE
This 40 km cycle, with few hills, starts in Burnaby and takes us along lovely residential streets and park trails in the Fraser foreshore areas of Burnaby and South Vancouver. We will be stopping in one of the Fraser foreshore parks for a bag lunch. Meet at 10:00 am in the parking lot at the corner of Boundary Road and 46th Ave. in Burnaby, beside Central Park. HIKE MOUNT SEYMOUR (NORTH SHORE)
A local favourite, this hike can be very hot and dry on a sunny day. Bring a lot of water! Round trip of 9 km leads you up steep slopes and around large rocks. It will be the leader’s choice whether to go via Mystery Lake but be assured of panoramic views from any of the three peaks. Elevation gain of 450 metres, high point on third peak is 1453 metres, approximately 5 hours. Meet in the Mount Seymour parking lot at 9:00.

MONDAY, AUGUST 31 – WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2
CYCLE GALLOPING GOOSE TRAIL – SOOKE, VANCOUVER ISLAND
This is an old favourite. Take the 9:00 a.m. ferry from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay as foot passengers with bicycles. Park your car in the Tsawwassen Long-Term Parking Lot ($12.00 per 24 hours). On Day 1, cycle about 40 km from Swartz Bay through Sydney along water vistas, eventually connecting with the Galloping Goose Trail. Accommodation for two nights is booked at Glen Lake Inn (in Colwood), right on the trail. Day 2, we will cycle further along the Galloping Goose or cycle to sites in the surrounding area. Day 3, we will cycle into Victoria to visit the Royal BC museum for a special showing of treasures from the British Museum before cycling back to Swartz Bay to catch the ferry home.
